They say adjust the freeplay between the camshaft wheels to 1/4 to 3/8 play.
After setting them I also wound them off with the engine running to hear the rattle then wound them in slowly till it just stopped + 1/4 turn. This had me nearly back where I started. So you could do it either way. Take comfort from the fact they wont/cant retract. The worst that will happen if they are loose is you get chain rattle (which you will here) and you just tighten a little more.
If they are too tight you should here it squeel (according to folk here) but again just slacken them off. HTH
