Fair enough!

It gets unreliable once you get over 130bhp, so that's why the racers and drag bikes use the additional pivot plates.

I can cope with most things when riding, but having the back end of the bike break off, and all the engine oil joining in isn't my idea of fun.

But before anyone panics, there's no chance of this happening to a standard one, or one with cans and carb work, you'll be well under the 130 limit, and even then they'll last quite a while before fatigue sets in to the gearbox/ SA pivot casting.
Mine has been abused on the drag strip with just shy of 120 bhp for a few years, as well as street use, no signs of any problems, but as I get more power this winter it might start to concern me a bit.

my engine mods are/will be big bore 2:1 pipe, 41 FCR's, lightened flywheel, cbr stick coils, manual cct's and maybe a 15 thou head skim and slotted/dialed cams.
don't think i'll be troubling 130.......

i did read somewhere that mr moriwaki said they had trouble with the cranks snapping around 140-150bhp and had to go billet, because they're cross-drilled they snap at the big end?? apparently honda changed the design of the oil ways on the SP-1's.... but i expect you knew that already, LOL.

I agree that I don't think that 130 bhp will be in the cards with those mods alone (although I can't really estimate what the FCRs will do for you in terms of bhp). That kind of power would likely require some or all of cams, headwork and high comp pistons. Of course, I may be wrong (wouldn't be the first time....)

As for the cranks breaking, I got a decent explanation from Roger D and it seems the problem is not rpm or actual power ouput related but rather a product of aggressive cams. Stage 1 cams do not pose a problem, nor do elevated rpm levels (within reason of course). When submitted to the stresses of high lift cams, the cranks tend to break at the bevel area, something the billet cranks rectified with a much more gradual bevel/bend. Makes me wonder if someone couldn't get a stock crank welded up in that area than machined down to smooth it out and balance it (effect on metallurgy? distortion due to heating?)

afaik harris didnt make rearsets for the firestorm, but the early fireblade ones fit.
ive got a harris fireblade set in blck on my storm & theyre top quality.
apart from the footpegs are very fragile and are designed to snap off in an off to save the rearset and frame.
have a look at a site called racealternatives for rearsets and spares, ie footpegs, linkages etc.
They did....

Wow they have really taken off. I looked at Harris prices for other models and they seem to be around the £200 mark. These look like making way over that.
