They will get hot, the alternator puts out 100-250 or so maps of power at 12v, and any that isn't used by the engine, lights and other electricals is turned to heat.

That's why racers use a total loss battery system, they charge the battery off the bike, and run purely from the battery when on track, then there's no load on the alternator at all.
Of course, they can also remove the alternator rotor and stator, and save weight.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

That makes sense Tony. I'm after an R1/R6 R/R! Looks and sounds ok to make work- chop Honda connector off & use female spades with solder & neat insulation tape.

Use heatshrink, it won't lose its sticky and come undone.

I posted this somewhere the other day but here it is again anyway. Replacement Regulator/Rectifier Mod.
http://vtr1000f.wickidnet.com/

I just used crimp on insulated spade terminals when doing mine, I've been meaning to do a proper job of but haven't got around to it yet. I haven't had any problems with it, but it would be better if non insulated terminals where soldered on and heatshrinked as Tony said, for a more secure and professional job. You will need longer mounting bolts as well as the R1 R/R is a bit deeper.

I removed the standard terminals from the connector and then put a heatshrink sleeve over the exposed copper and put them onto the correct pins on the yamaha R/R without any outer connector. I used a couple of strategic cable ties to make sure they dont move by them self or pull out and it has been great for the last 2 yrs

Cheers Carl & Al. I did read the web page Carl- v useful.

All good tips. Just need to source a reasonably priced R/R. eBay quite difficult to find one that I am happy with - best to go for a new, pattern part or 2nd hand original? All seem about £40.

Even better if you can afford the extra expense get a MOSFET R/R There's a great write up over the pond on R/R's, well worth a read.

Went for an '07 R1 RR- which is (according to superhawk article above) a MOSFET R/R- paid £60 so hopefully a good investment- it's got two sockets from the pic so I guess one will have the pos and neg and the other socket will be the 3 x ac connectors. Ill just need to work out which of the 2 connectors are pos and which is the neg!

Edit- I've found a wiring diag. Pos is left hand plug (next to the 3 phase socket ). Ill post a pic when I can.

Ill take pics when I fit it. Ta. Griff.

That;s probably one of the best R/R you can get. I think all the MOSFET have two plugs IIRC which keeps the Regulator part and Rectifier part on separate circuits.
