cleaning a small rusty fuel tank?

There was an article in practical sports bike on this and they were using small chip gravel, but I can't remember what liquid they had but I am pretty sure it wasn't petrol. I expect just water would be fine as its the stones that are doing the work, not a solvent.

yeah I read that also, I wasn't sure about getting the inside wet , with water that is

just petreal it and have done with it...

put that in google and not getting any joy

sorry...PETSEAL...i used it in my panther and a65 tanks...it clumps all the loose rust n crap together and also seals the inside of the tank.

If you remove the fuel tap & the pick up pipes from the tank first & then blank the hole they came from.

Take about a plastic cup or 2 of drive way gravel from yours or your neighbours drive & wash it so you don't add to your problem then throw it in the tank after you have removed the old petrol & add a fluid that will help to remove old petrol varnish that will hold the rust in the fluid about 2 - 3 pints for a bike tank ( adjust accordingly ). Then blank the filling neck with ( for instance ) a crisp packet clamped on with a retaining clip Then shake the tank like a loon for a while.

The tank doen't have to be prefectly rust free but the less the better. Then use a tank sealer from halfords ( other suppliers .....) & rotate the tank to cover all sides leaveing it resting on each side, top,bottom for a couple of minutes & your tank should be sealed from the nastness that comes in the petrol today.
Remove the blanking plate & refit tap plus trim the filling neck & job done.

Leave to full dry off & refit follow the instructions on the sealer bottle & there isn't a real big hassle just a bit of time.

If you really want to get techy about it you could not use sealer but instread replate the inside of the tank by electo plating using a adjustable battery charger a steel rod & salt water.

Personally i would go with the sealer.

just fixed a tank that had rusted so bad there where pin hole's in it
i used hydrochloric acid to eat the rust put it in the tank for about an hour then wash out with water (the next night and it looked terrible)
did the same procedure this time washing it out with warm water and then dry with a hair dryer the tank looks like new ( and had some nice new pin holes to boot
so now it was time for the tank sealer i used tapox which i got off ebay i must say this stuff works great coated the inside of the tank in a thick coat of a paint ( looks like red lead paint ) its back on the bike and going good
wear safety glasses
have some water on standby
cover pin holes with tape to stop leaks
remove all alloy from tank ( use bungs )

Yep the fuel tank, and this is the fuel tap, yuk, yuk. Still no problem, soaked the tank overnight in a solution of cheapo (16p) bottles of vinigar and warm water. This morning pourded out the goo, and inserted some stringed nuts (steel nuts on a string) and shook for England, then left her another hour with more vinegar. Now she looks clean inside, so I doubt it will even need sealing, but time will tell.

seen people on youtube using cider vinagar inside the tank and on old rusty nuts and bolts need to soak for at least 48 hours. then use a seeler after you have flushed the cider vinagar. never tried it myself.
