Re: Fuel Light
agreed . especially the bit about needing a service or carbs out of adjustment. also the time the light comes on is bound to vary from bike to bike .Stratman wrote:I did a spirited 150 miles on Sunday and averaged 44 mpg. 117miles to RLOD then 11.66 litres in at 119 miles. I have adjusted the mpg figure for the gearing.
IMHO, if you get 70 miles to RLOD then you are either not riding it properly (you don't need to rev the nuts off these things, nor should you lump around in too high a gear) or the bike needs a good service. In 13 years of ownership I have always averaged 42mpg.
How far can you go after the light comes on? Totally depends on the angle of the rod in the tank, which is what determines when it comes on in the first place - in other words, it's a pointless comparison as all bikes will be different (later ones had the fuel gauge of course which is a different system)

Re: Fuel Light
Sorry I am calling bull on anything above 90 till fuel light I had two Firestorms with the smaller tanks and NO WAY would I get above 85 miles till light came on.
totally standard with full service, valve clearance done and carbs balanced, riden without canning it 90 miles, no more than that, pushing on with the bike used to give me 75 miles on both bikes.
I dont know about the later storms with the bigger tanks tho.

I'd say that was pretty much what I'd expect usually too.lloydie wrote:I got 113 yesterday till the red light came on and I don't hang about at all .and I still only got 11L in .

I've had two firestorms NEVER got anywhere near that on either. Motorway journeys or not.Stratman wrote:Call what you like; had this bike for 13 years. what milage i get to a tank won't be the same as anyone else .
if you want better mpg change the way you ride .

Re: Fuel Light
Hmm seems strange, I got just shy of 100 miles to redlight and that was with spirited two-up riding :s

Re: Fuel Light
I think it's a bit unfair to call it bull. It is a very strange the fuelling on these bikes. I hear this all the time, some get 70-80 and other get just over 100 the really lucky ones are getting into the 130's it's weird. And it's not just down to carbs being set up wrong and things like that. Yes I can accept riding style maybe is partly a cause. There's two totally different bikes there, Stratman's which is pretty much standard apart from cans and then Lloydy's with mods like lightened flywheel, QAT throttle, billet stacks etc, and they both get over 100. I bet they both have totally different riding styles as well. There is just no logic to it.
I hear the same old discussions on the Superhawk site. You have some that say they get over 100-120 to a tank. Then the ones who get less, turn around and say, well if you getting over 100 then your fuelling is not right or your not riding it right etc etc. And then when they say they get 70-80 a tank, the other half that get over a 100 have the same argument, well your bike is not fuelling right or your not riding it right etc etc. It's weird. It seems for no apparent reason that some VTR's drink more than others.
I reckon if you got two exact VTR's no differences (brand new zero mileage) ran them around the track with the same rider keeping the same constant speed each bike would use a different amount of fuel. It's not logical I know, but I have found no reason for it yet.

I stick to speed limits on back and main roads and push on, on Dual roads and motorways.lloydie wrote:then its you and the way you ride .. everyone rides different and every bike is different .

The storm didnt need a lot of reving which is one of the main reasons I like it, not like my blade, which needs a handlfull of throttle. I just cant see how two bike can give me nigh on same consumption, the storm was on of my favourite bike, but it does like a drink.
Unless someones got the later model with the bigger tank then you gotta be riding like a granny on a motorway to get 100 till light comes on, on an earlier model and I still wouldnt believe it.
