That's a 500/4 not the 550. The 500/4 was released over here in 1971, just after the 750/4. The 550 came out around 76 I think and had the 4 into 1 exhaust system. It was the bigger brother to the 400/4.
Anyway, back to myh stamp collecting!!!!

I enjoyed reading through that. I recognised James hunt, I thought Jeff Bridges at first, but then I remembered I always get the two mixed up  As for the rest I was lost.

The Honda 550\4 was in production from 74-78 with a 4 into 4 exhaust, so you better stick to stamps.......lol

Not in the UK mate. The 550 was a supersport model the same as the 400/4 and 750 F1 models. All had four into one exhausts. The four into four exhausts on that bike and the style would make it a 500/4 over here. It may be you guys over there got different models.
Theres a really nice article on the 500-4 Honda in this months Classic motorcycle mechanics. It was one of the bike posters on my wall when I was a kid and I got to "work" n some when I helped out in a bike shop for my Saturday job. Really smart bike in the black & gold colour scheme.

Good to see those two faces again. I thought it was Mike The Bike Hailwood, but that's because I'm old enough to grow up with him racing. IIRC he was killed along with his daughter when going to collect fish and chips, by a lorry driver doing a U turn on them, they had nowhere to go,

The first 550-4 we got was the K3, sold alongside the F1 ss.
I'll have a look later for the link to CMM.

Blue or orange Jamie? Mine was blue and had a piper system on it. Sounded amazing but put a big hole in the midrange!

I think my 4-1 had Honda stamped on it near the outlet, but it was pretty loud and skinny like an aftermarket item, so maybe not...?

It was black with gold pinstripes, cafe racer bars and seat unit, looked like a proper 70's yoof racer!

Did yours stink of oil and general 'burning' after a good blast?

I had mine in 84 and it was a 77 bike so not so much. Did chuck unburnt hydrocarbons out though. Very smelly. Good fun though.
