Ooh, its better than a regular soap opera this, isn't it?

I haven't done the head thing, I had a new engine instead as we think the crank was bent in the process (though I'm not sure to this day about that, but there you go)

Good luck - can't wait for the next instalment!

hmm everyday's a happy day here LOL.

Should begin the process tomorrow, if i'm lucky might get an hour tonight just to get the easy stuff of ready for the next stage..Huff!

Feels like everything is against me and biking at the minute, found out last night that my alternator on the Super Ten has gone as well.

Next stop single cylinder super motard me thinks, less to take appart when something breaks ;-)

Last year, the year after the CCT went pop on the Storm, I was a bit apprehensive at riding her. Bought the TDM as a touring bike. VTR kept chugging to a halt - no -one could diagnose why. Really fed up - wanted a can of petrol and some matches.

Eventually, it was a split plug cap, that was all. After I'd washed it, after a little while the warmth of the engine would suck the water down the cap by capillary action and short out the electrics.

Anyway, the point of this tale is, not that is fixed. I also have my manual CCTs in. She pulls like Kylie and I'm really happy with her again.

It will all be worth it - I promise!

Good luck with it Jurgen, I'm sure if you take it steady and think about what you are doing you will be fine :!: Best tip I can give (well it usually works for me) is if things are not going well, or you come up against a problem leave it, go and have a cup of tea, that will give you time to think about the best next move, and give you time to cool down

I see by your last sentence you've still got your sense of humour :!: keep that and you'll be fine :!: :D

Okie dokie after almost ten hours of messing about...mainly due to a rounded bolt i am done.

The head is off and i can now order parts.. huraar. Turns out i've got 2 bent valves...typical was hopeing it's just the one but hey ho you can't win em all.

Well chuffed now though even though it did take so long...you know when your just getting frustrated and that can easily cost you a couple of hours... tried going for a cup of tea and a smoke but didn't seem to help.

Is it just the valves and h/gasket i need to order or would you recommened anything else while i'm at it?

Well done Jurgen :!: :D
The reason you have two bent valves is because two open at the same time, it could have been worse it could have been the four :!:

Have you had a close inspection of the top of the piston where the valves made contact for any signs of damage :?: hopefully that will be ok.

When you compress the valve springs to remove the collet's, (if you've not already done so) the Haynes manual recommends not compressing them more than necessary :!: (It probably weakens the springs)

Once you have removed the valves check that the valve guides are not damaged :!:

Once you get the new valves you will need to lap-them-in using grinding paste, I don't know if you do know that or not, but there's no point in mentioning that once the head is back on if you didn't know :!:

I think valves and a head gasket is about it, providing the valve guides are ok, it may pay to have a look at the CCT gasket while you're at it and you'll need to replace that rounded bolt. You will also no doubt need different shims for getting the valve clearance correct, but you won't know what thickness you need at this stage.

Cheers,

Chris.

Cheers mate, don't i need to change the head bolts? I know when i did my car years ago that i had to change these over for new ones to make sure i could get them to the correct torque.

Just to check see if i'm going mad when it comes down to doing the valve clearance do i need to take everything off again or can i just stick in a shim of the correct thickness once i get there.

Counting chickens a little early, but am just eager to get it done now... quite excited how sad is that.

Piston looks in pretty good condition can't see any marks on it where it made contact which is pretty good.

As far as I know you don't need to replace the head bolts, also I've not seen any mention of that in the Haynes manual, it just says to put some clean engine oil on the threads and on the underside of the heads of the six 10mm bolts.

Valve clearances, once it's back together, to fit different thickness shims you will need to remove the cam shaft again to gain access to the shim which is under the follower.

I would be excited once the job is done and ready to go, not just yet

Good news about the piston, hopefully it's only the valves that got damaged :!:

Jurgen,
It's nice too hear how the job is going, and by the sound of it you've been very busy. I bet you were happy when you fired her back up for the first time after carrying out the work :!:

I hope all is well when you do the road test, I'm sure it will be :!:

Cheers,

Chris.

LOL well took it for a road test and all is AOK.

Really chuffed, couldn't ride it too hard as i've got a new rear tyre on it and have been advised to let the Valves wear in a bit so will take it easy for a few more miles.

But have to say feels miles better then i remember it...funny how that works :-)
