When I got off it to go and pay I looked down to put the side stand down and all I could see was petrol gushing out all down the side of the bike .
Thankfully it's only a Mile to the petrol station from my house and it hadn't got hot enough to catch on fire but it was smoking like a good one so it was very close to.
I wheeled it to a safer place away from the pumps and grabbed a fire extinguisher and a few buckets of sand just in case as it was now flooding out .
Ck quickly drove back to mine to get some tools .
When he got back I removed the tank and found the leak .
It was coming from the fuel level sender .
The O ring wasn't doing its job anymore .
We managed to drain the tank below the sender so I could ride it home once all the fuel had evaporated away .
Got it home and we managed to fit two O rings ,one a little bigger than the other to try and get a good seal .
That we did but I'll order a new oem tomorrow to be on the safe side .
We then Took it for an mot(it passed )
Still with ck following behind me just in case more wrong happens .
Looks like I need to change the engine out as its burning coolant and oil too .
Still loosing compression on the front cylinder .
I've started stripping it when I got back ready for a new engine .
I'll strip the tuned engine later in the year to find what went wrong or what I did wrong when I built it .
I'm going to build another but start off with one with better bored as this one was on the limit .

did you replaced all the gaskets and seals when you were last time into engine? And valve seals are ok?
New bore with new pistons is better idea than get another used engine. Pricey, but at the end cost less because you do it only once when all done properly.
The fact is, that you have little chance do build stage 1 cheap and fully working. My price was not far away from what you would pay to Roger.

Yep all new gubbins was used .
I wasn't after a stage 1 just a little extra over standard .

Check the engine oil for petrol dilution. If the level is higher than you had before....
The explosion could have been fuel igniting in the crankcases.

The difference between being 17 in the 70s and now...... Bet mine is still faster

Wasn't much fun following that smelly thing
Just as well I was there though. Probably never would have made it to MOT other wise.

Thanks Marty , tbere only £7 new so I'll order one , the one that was fitted looked ok too !!! After the fuel leak I wouldn't take the chance but thank you .

No fuel in the oil , I think the explosion was due to too much choke and a week battery .
I fitted the bigger better battery yesterday and it helped .
But think the damage was already done :-(

Quite a difference between the two .
Also the reliability factor too .
These youths starting out now won't gain the tinkering skills that we learnt as these new breed of bikes are 4 strokes and are very reliable .
Shame really as riding and maintaining the bike when I was a lad went hand in hand .
I was always told "if you can't fix it ,you can't ride it ,so learn .
You'll need all your money for fuel,come summer you'll understand " .

Not quite Al...in the 70's you could of had a 250... 125 laws didn't come in till the 80's.

I remember that my Suzuki GT250 X7 got spanked by a spotty 17 year old on his 1982 Yamaha RD125LC
I couldn't believe how quick it was and the 125 law was supposed to slow them down
I would stil have your KH over that R1 wannabe though Al
