I have a feeling they will be hollow filled with heat resistant material, otherwise they won't crush to remove any discrepancies if they were solid. Don't worry though, and so you don't feel so bad I bought a pair of those too a while back

I wonder what the I.D. diameter of the exhaust outlet is on the cylinderhead

Talking about bits arriving, the exhaust springs arrived today.

Opened the package up.



Counted all the bags.



Looking good, so I opened a bag up.



Bah, a lot shorter, 65mm ordered, 55mm arrived & with shoddy ends to the springs to boot.

This is what I ordered.

I've been down the shed to see whats what & to see if they'll stretch to 65mm. They did, but bloody hell are they strong.

I've cooled down & had a think, I've have managed to squeeze the spring end closed. Looks ok tbh.

The only problem I can see is the spring being too short at the header end, stretching the spring from the flange over the sleeve to the lug which will be welded on the pipe..

They might still do, I'll only find out when all the other parts arrive & I can assemble the headers.

I was made up when they arrived, disappointed when I opened it up & now I'm coming around. Reminds me of Christmas morning when I was a Kid

Just been hunting for the spring I squeezed & found one bag which has the correct springs, albeit with ropey ends.

Here's the difference



They are easier to stretch too.

How far apart do you plan to weld the lugs?

Here's a picture of a half built header the spring holes haven't been drilled yet so they're hooked into the mounting holes.

The longer/softer 65mm spring is on the left & harder short 55mm right.

It's just to give an idea of what's what



I might get away with them for the headers as there will be a 90 bend after the header stub, but I think that they're too short for the inline joints.

Looking at various pictures, I was aiming for a 30mm pipe overlap & lugs welded 15mm - 20mm beyond the joints (depending on spring tension).

Around 60mm - 70mm between the spring hoops

What do you recon ?

Good news is that the 4x sanitary flanges & 4x 45° bends have arrived

Been tinkering with the flanges again today.

I made the mistake of making the 51mm collars that go between the flanges & the sealing face too long. I made them 20mm long & they needed to be 15mm for it to be the same length as the original header.

So I made some 15mm long collars & drilled some holes for the springs to hook onto.

I then fitted them onto the head to see if they fitted. I'm made up, they fitted like a glove first time

I know I've got to cut the 48mm pipe down, I'm not sure by how much so I'll do that when I move on to the pipework

I've been down the shed for hours today doing some heavy thinking, the camera was dead so no pictures.

I've cleaned the exhaust ports & nipped up the headers to the heads. I've also tacked some short stub lengths of 45mm tube to some 90° bends.

All change with the exhaust routing, I think it's going to have to be a left side exhaust, there's just no room to do it under the carb.

The handy thing about making the headers separate is that if the exhaust routing does look crap, I can just toss the pipe & start again without faffing with making more headers.

It also looks as if I've got to cut some more frame away

It's going to take some thinking to sort this out.
