bloody shim kits lol - £3.00 for a single shim or 70 odd for a kit 8O
I have a good deal- the local dealer just swaps ones I don't need for ones I do- doesn't bother charging me, so can't really beat that.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

worth it in the long run as the same shims will fit my other bike.
got a 7mm set as well from years ago but theyre too small diameter and mostly gone rusty lol!
fyi the storm shims are 9.48mm diameter.

and in case nobody spotted the deliberate mistake i misread .0016 as 16 thou when in fact it meant 0.16mm, and .0030 as 30 thou when it should've read 0.3mm.
so if i'd have ordered shims i'd be totally wrong lol as in i'd be 10 thou out on the inlet clearance & 24 on the exhaust !!!
it'd sound like a duke

had to be done unfortunately, can't start it up knowing it's not right - you know what will happen lol
Benny,
who does shims for £3 each :?: When I did mine, my local dealer charged something like £7 or £8 for one 8O
The kit the last time I searched was around £200 iirc.

Chris.

PS. It looks like you had a bargain with those cams

PPS.

most online bike bit shops do shims for 2.80 - £3.00, even silvers / wemoto, but main dealers will charge you full whack.
HotCams do a shim kit in various diameters, from most decent retailers - you get 3 of each shim from 1.2, to 3.5mm in .05mm increments which is like 140+ shims for 70 odd quid - fkin bargain if you ask me

and yes, i'm very happy with the deal on the big shiny candlesticks - especially seeing as where they came from
just i can't attempt to start it up til it's shimmed proper.
was a 2hr job to install them but then hit a full stop due to not having right size shims
i'll be pissed off if they haven't arrived by today lol, as i paid for next day del.

Benny,
Cheers for the info on the HotCams shim kits.
£70 for 140+ shims sounds pretty good to me as well :D

I'm looking forward too hearing your opinion on these new cams too.

I hadn't realised you need to fit core plugs in the cam ends.

well if the shim kit i ordered on weds hasnt turned up by tomorow ill drive to bitz4bikes and pick some up, so there might be a full kit going in the sales, unless i return it.
i paid for next day delivery so i could ride it at wkend :redface

tbh im not expecting it to be the smoothest ride with the cams and i may have to play with sprockets to get it right as it will probably have a power band rather than a flat curve (if theres such a thing as a flat curve!)

without the core plugs, the lube oil would just piss out of the end of the camshafts and the right hand side would starve of oil.. they are hollow, with a 2mm drilling that lines up with the groove in the journal where the shaft runs.
there is only one oil feed point on the top shell casting, that lines up with a hole going through the head.
oil is forced up this gallery, into the top shell casting, along the groove in the journal, then through the 2mm hole on the left side, into and along the cam, lubing the right side through the holes again... same on the inlet & exhaust.

i almost forgot to fit one core plug lol - or i thought i had, but there were 5 in the set, not 4!
without it, the cam and head would be wrecked in minutes!

once did that on a 400 superdream, head gasket failed on a sunday, so i made my own, but inadvertantly obscured an oliway - i got about 15 mile before the top end seized!

started up fine, ran til the carbs ran out of fuel... fook me does it rev!!! :biggrin like a bloody crosser!!!
i put the tank back on and gave it some more welly - straight to redline fast as fook pickup - can't wait to see what it's like when the flywheel goes on

the new cans sound er... loud i think. ears are still ringing lol, not a good idea to redline a bike in the garage with straight thru art cans lol!

 only jesting lol!!! it fkin pwns! OMFG the first time it's actually power wheelied proper just by winding it on a bit - took me by surprise a bit!
seems a lot more torquey and wants to rev. and rev. and rev! it just doesnt stop lol - i was expecting a bit of a boost in the middle and maybe a shift higher up but fook me it's bloody brill!!!
totally made up with it and looking forward to a proper blast on it tomorrow avvy :biggrin the cans are cut down quite a bit and are loud as fook so i thought it best to calm it for the night .

WOW just how quick does that rev counter move now Benny  great to see the video, the bike sounds very different now IMHO :D

Cheers for the run down on the oil ways etc on the cam's. I realise they are hollow and I've obviously seen the holes in the cams for lubricating the journals, but for some reason or other it never occurred to me about core plugs being fitted in the ends.

Chris.
