You could always file to the right size by hand using a flat stone

Tried that with grinding paste on a sheet of float glass, but they always wear to a wedge shape.
If you're grinding several at once that method might work....
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

This is am often overlooked step. You should not just trust the number on the shim.
While a micometer is the proper tool I normally use my digital calipers to take the readings.

Then again it could just be me over thinking the job again.....

But I do get a lot of miles out of my engines....
I also find my set of digital calipers do the job fine, I was surprised at how accurate they are.

Same here . Mine are out by .06 so I factor that in when setting them to 0

Well, the bike is back together and ready to fire up!

Just need to finish repacking my can and fit the system.

I had bit of a brain freeze last night & struggled to work out the front cam shaft positions, for about 30 mins I thought my flywheel timing marks wouldn't line up with the untouched rear cam marks, turns out I was being dippy. After a quick chat with Mr Mon & Lloydie.

Fingers crossed my can wadding turns up tonight & then I can go vroom vroom!

:D :D

Just fired the old girl up & went for a spin, I'm not sure what I've done but CHRIST IT'S QUICK!!! And NO rattles!

Feels like I've gained a ton of power somehow

All I've done is:

Repacked cans (no wadding at all!)
Got a crack in header welded up.
Sealed leaky exhaust joints.
Adjust one valve clearance.
Removed a seized carb mixture screw and set the new thumb screws at Lloydies recomendation.
Removed throttle return cable
New plugs.
Oil.
Filter.

I just want to say a massive thanks for all the advice, help and time you have all given me, the bike feels 100% better and I've learnt a few tricks.

Looks like Cinderella will go to the ball! (At high speed) :)

How did you know you had leaky exhaust joints? My storm has never performed the way i thought it would and have wondered if my valves need adjustment. I have d&d cans and k&n air filter + jet kit.

I replaced the two crush exhaust header gaskets a few weeks ago when I had the header pipe off to polish. There didn't seem to be any difference when I put the pipes back on.

I also just bought a kincrome digital Micrometer which should be up to the task of measuring the clearance based on what you guys said in this thread.

Did you have to replace any gaskets when you did your service?

Sorry for the random questions but this is a very timely and helpful thread for me right now!

Cheers
