Got head gasket and tensioners today, head and cams are now on, timing set up and it all turns over by hand.Checked the valve clearances too(spot on).
So its the big day tomorrow, I'll get the carbs on and fire her up again. If alls ok i'll finish rebuilding the rest. Talks of being nice weather on Sunday :D :D 8)
Glad too hear you've almost got her back on the road, I hope everything went well today :D

Summer!...What Summer? I'm still waiting for it to start 8O
And Hell!, If they want to fix the water shortage I'll be glad to drain my boots out in their pond

No I put them back without, not sure what the caps look like but unless they are crimped on somehow they seem like they could come off easily and no tellings where they would end up. Would like to know more though.
The front tensioner didn't have one on either and it was in perfect condition. I know these tensioners had been in for at least 17,000 miles which is more than some peoples seem to last so not too worried. I noticed the slippers that the tensioner push onto have a metal plate attached.
I am guessing that Honda colour code the tensioners, my old ones had pink dots whereas the newer ones have orange dots.I guess before pink they were white? No doubt this is just a way to age a tensioner rather than be modified.
Gotta say that with her all set up again with the valve clearances done and the carbs balanced she feels like a new bike, all sorted for just under £180(new valves x4, 2 tensioners and a head gasket)All in all an easy job to do and i'm not mechanically brilliant either. Wonder what a dealership would charge for the same job?

I just changed my cct's too in the last few days - first time doing and a right pain in the butt if you ask me :-) Anyway I ended up taking the front one back out because I realised the cap was off - I thought it was part of the old tensioner! It comes off quite easily - you will noticed that there are two small holes in the metal cap which go over 2 small lobes on the rubber . Once the tension is applied it wont come off...

Mark,
I can see your way of thinking, but as Pmcq said, the metal caps can't come off while the the tensioner is functioning as it should (spring not broken) IMO it would be impossible :!:
I'm amazed at 17,000 miles the front tensioner rubber was still intact :!:

Not wishing to pee you off, but I personally wouldn't have put them back without the metal caps :!: but obviously it's your choice and as I said can understand your way of thinking :!:

I think you did well doing the job for £180, (hope you remembered to lap the valves in) I wouldn't say it's an easy job myself, admittedly there are more difficult ones, but it's the front cylinder that makes it the pain in the backside being so awkward to get at, which makes the job quite fiddly :!:

As far as what a garage would charge I would say £300 to £400 at least may be more :!:

Ya didn't pee me off with the bit about the metal caps but ya did with the bit about remembering to lap the valves in :P :P
(actually my Dad done that bit..bike and car mechanic till he retired last year)I'm quite happy without the metal caps but now I know about it I think that i'll give Dave Silver a ring and get a couple, for the sake of an hour or so's work I think i'll sleep easier, might not get 17k out of this set. All said and done they must be cheap.
