if you want some really inexpensive but cute pets get some rats. they are really smart and they eat anything. if you like it they will.
we have two and they are very friendly. they never bite and are always keen to see you. they can be taught to do tricks and come when called. they will fetch things.
they are absolutely omniverous and will eat your leftovers! favourites include spare ribs, chicken wings and pork chops after you think you've eaten all the meat off. they love anything sweet including chocolate but like most snacks including monster munch, prawn crackers etc.
in fact i cannot think of anything they haven't eaten.
they like most drinks, and will get very excited if given some beer once a week. they both like american style pale lagers, but one is more adventurous than the other one and he likes proper Pilsner beers and sherry.

My first dog was a Labrador and he went everywhere with me and was well known at my favourite watering hole. He used to make his way there ahead of me and there was always a bowl of scrap meat from the kitchen and a bowl of lager waiting for him. There's nothing more comical than trying to walk home with a pissed dog !
