Re: FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CountryBoy wrote:I Can't believe it!!!!!, after all this time i've finaly fixed it!!!!!!!, followed Sirch's instructions at the weekend and 'hey presto', it turns out that the bike shop that originally fixed the bike after a CCT failure nearly a year ago had set the timing up 180 degrees out!, after i got the bike back from the shop i'd put it straight into storage and only tested it up and down the road at low speed and it had seemed ok, it was only after about 8 months when i took it back out again that the problem appeared the first time i gave it a hand full.

The stupid part is i assumed (first mistake) that a qualified mechanic in a bike shop would have done a proper job on the original repair and at least got the timing right, because of this assumption i never checked the timing right through i only put the engine to FT and then checked the marks on the cams, checking it right through by setting up the rear first and then checkinig the cam markings showed the FE and FI on the inside instead of the outside, turn the cams through 180 and problem solved, took it for a ride Friday night and we're back to normal.

Just wanted to say thankyou to all the people who helped along the way with suggestions and guidance, and a big thankyou to Sirch, mate your a star!!.
 Excellent news at last :!:  That's a lot cheaper than another engine :!:
I'm really pleased that you've finally got to the bottom of the problem at long last (44 posts later :!: ) and thanks for letting us all know :!:

Cheers,

Chris.

Well lets make it 45 Posts!! I have had exactly the same problems and I am heartened to read of a potential solution.
I bent a couple of ex valves on the front in Belgium, managed to ride home on it (350 miles) after a chap who owned a bike shop in Ypres let/helped me take it to bits in his workshop. I now realise that I may have got it 360 degrees out, the full 4-stroke cycle being 720 degrees.
When I replaced the valves, reset clearances and re-assembled, I did the front first then turned the engine over 90 degrees anticlockwise (thinking this was the same as doing the rear then turning 270 anticlock!) I have laid awake at night trying to a:/remember what I did and b:/what the effect would be .

Apparently the effect can be that you get a rev ceiling of 6K!!
I will try to work on it this weekend but if any of you have a suggestions/hints/tip before I start then type away please!!
Regards
Paul

Im Sure you'll be fine Paul.
Just remember to remove the plugs so you can turn the engine over easier and start with the front properly aligned and you cant go wrong (famous last words  )
Good luck

Paul,
I think you've got a bit mixed up there :!:

If the front cylinder valve timing it set up using all the timing marks just as you would for removing the CCT, you then need to turn the engine over 270 degrees (three quarters of a turn) ANTI-CLOCKWISE to line up the rear cylinder.

If the rear cylinder valve timing is set up first just as you would for removing the CCT, then you need to turn the engine over 450 degrees (one and a quarter turns) ANTI-CLOCKWISE to line up the front cylinder.

Thanks for the advice Sirch, I think I actually wrote the account wrong, I think I did as you suggested but then turned only 90 degrees anticlock, not the 450 that I should have.
Had so little opportunity to look at it that I think I will start over, my thinking was that it was the front cylinder that I had to replace the valves on and I was working on the basis that the rear was going to provide my 'datum reference' .
Trying to work out what the implications are if I have the front out by 360 degrees and I then base the setting of the rear on the front- does it make any difference?
Probably better for me to use the rear as the reference again but follow you instructions and turn anti 450 degrees.
Will advise of progress if anyone interested

Sirch, followed your guidance and now the proud owner of a indecently quick VTR that will rev it's nuts off (well past 6k anyway).
Forgotten how much fun a full power Storm can be!!

Thanks again, you should sell the info on Ebay - worth a fortune!! (Only kidding)

Thanks again.

Hi Paul,
I can understand your way of thinking for setting the whole of the valve timing up the wrong way around so to speak:!: I personally don't know if it would work like that as I've never tried it.

Personally if it were me and I was going to re-set the valve timing I'd go with changing it to what I know works, (as in what I suggested) at least that way you won't need to do it all over again if it doesn't work the other way :!:

It's obviously up to you :!:
