Re: Why don't we have a Dyno Day ?

Post by Rob »

I'm in :D

Will be nice to check what effect the little things done over the years have made. Not too bothered about BHP just the curve and A/F mixture really just to check it's not dangerously far out.

It feels ok to me but I'm probably so used to any problems I don't even notice them anymore

Never done a dyno before, any noise restrictions? I assume not otherwise it's pointless but I hope they don't have any close neighbours with 15+ 'Storms with no baffles being redlined......

Just take a memory stick and download your run details.
Make sure you out the colour on the details, then we can settle the argument once and for all!

What about if we could do one at a workshop day as well?

Those that cannot or don't want to do this one could still do one

I have already put up a post about setting one up in Yorkshire so a workshop, dyno run and a ride out would be a great idea

And those not wanting to do a dyno could still be doing something at the workshop

Nice thought. My thinking on the whole ' get everyone together for a mass dyno run ' was that lots of people could benefit from seeing what other peoples tuning efforts had produced, and there would be no variation in conditions or dyno/operator. There are people here who are always looking for that litle way to improve their bikes running, and I think something along these lines would take out a lot of the guesswork. Bit sad if anyones not prepared to pay a tenner to join in and get a comparison printout. Most power runs are £30 and upwards.

Those results could maybe used on a follow up workshop day soon after, with the emphasis on carb set up.

Plus its a bit of a meet and greet, cuppa tea and a giggle.

God I know what your game is. You just want to wipe out all the competition
It will be good to see you big fella

It wouldn't work quite like that. Obviously people need a minimum of one run just to get a readout of what their bike is doing. But I for one expect to be doing something like 6 runs or however how many it takes, and changing my carb set up in between runs until I get things right. I shall take a few tools for the job but if others want to bring a few tools as well it all helps. I generally don't lend my tools out, (not saying I wont though, but my eye will be watching  ) and I will need them myself anyway.

But having myself and others there to help those to remove carbs that don't know how or are unsure how to make changes would be beneficial. Once they are shown once or twice they can then do it themselves. They will then be whipping carbs off and making changes and putting them back on for another run in about a 15min turnover themselves.

So it will workout as being a workshop day with the emphasis on carb work at the dyno centre. People may want to purchase if they haven't already, either a jet kit, small selection of main jets, possibly a 45 and a 48 pilot jets depending on what's in your carbs already, or some small 10 to 20though shims (washers). I would have thought the dyno centre would also have jets for purchase there as well if needs be. So don't panic too much.

If one has a jet kit then everything will be in the box and nothing else is needed. But if one wants to do it on the cheap then shims would be needed for the original needles, bearing in mind you can only richen the original needles, and a small selection of Keihin jets. If one doesn't have a jet kit then the only thing your missing is adjustable needles (not sure if these can be purchased there) but then go down the route of shimming and either purchasing just the jets you require while there (It saves buying a bunch of jets that you wont use but may require to try.) or pre purchase a selection beforehand.

If you want an idea of what is a good selection of jets to pre purchase to play with then have a look what comes with the jet kits http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 14#p238580 if shimming stick with Keihin jets. If you want to go down the dynojet route then purchase dyno jet mains directly from their website beforehand but you will then need to use dyno jet needles to go with them. Yet again I don't know if the dyno centre sells dyno jets or needles at the premises.

Keihin jets can be purchased from eBay. Just make sure they are the right size and diameter for our carbs. series 21 Kehin jets are what is needed. I will post links in a little while.

Lloydie when you speak to him maybe you can find out what jets or needles they keep in stock at the premises for purchase.

The Storm takes larger jets than most bikes; it's not unusual to find that the dyno centre doesn't carry big enough ones in stock.
But because the rear pot is jetted larger than the front, you will usually only need one of each size, from 175 or 178 (std, so you'll have one already) to a 190.
It's only seven or eight.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

No Carl. I basically meant, I laymans terms, that if Mr X's bike is running like sh1t on the dyno, and Mr Y's is spot on, Mr X can copy Mr Y's settings at a pre organised workshop day . Might not achieve perfection, but probably get an improvement.

Mine wasnt set up on a dyno, but it runs well, and I'm pretty sure the settings would yield similar results on any storm, therefore not requiring dyno time ( or at least a lot less of it ).
