Chris, the route up was going to be like this http://goo.gl/maps/bkPke so I will be coming across from the west, but i will have a look to see if there are any other routes I like the look of. Also depends if i am hooking up with Grumpyfrog near Stafford
Ahh ok makes sense, if you're coming up the west side, then Settle is as good a place as any to meet up. If you came up the east then there aren't really any good roads after the Peak district.

That's a fcuk load of miles btw. It's going to be 10 hours riding easily for you. Mind you it's approx 300 miles from mine, so that'll be around 6-7 hours. Really hope it's not raining.

I am going to have to go and buy some textiles this week. I can't do all that way in my leathers if it rains.

i just put waterproof trousers and jacket over leather….never got into textiles.

yes friday will be a long ride for me, but the roads after Settle will be worth it :D and then it is a good reason for beer

Sorry to throw another spanner into the mix here, but I have to work on that Friday 16th. I have a handover meeting in Bradford here:
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=BD10+9 ... k&t=m&z=10

It's supposed to be at 2pm, but could be earlier, or could be later depending on progress from the contractor. It's a pretty straight forward job so my guess would be ill be away from there for 2.30pm.

If I go there in the car, it'll mean a 40 minute drive home, then changed and out for no later than 3.30pm. It'll take me an hour to get to Settle so that'll be 4.30pm.

If I went on the bike, it would take an hour to Settle so I could be there for 3.30pm, however I'm not sure about turning up to a handover in my bike stuff. Also not sure I want to leave a fully loaded up bike sitting around in a car park in Bradford, of all places.

It'll be approx 5 hours from Settle to Kirkcudbright, so that'll mean arriving at 8.30-9.30pm, much later than I had hoped.

**Edit**
I am definitely still up for this btw, so depending on what Grumpyfrog is doing with work and riding up, you might be better going up earlier Alistair, and ill either come up a slightly more direct route (Settle - Hawes - Sedbrough - M6 to Dumfries) or ill bring the bike on the trailer.

Depending on Grumpyfrog or if you're not bothered about riding up later then I am still up for doing as planned and meeting you at Settle.

Chris, lets see how Grumpyfrogs friday plans map out and I will alter the route and meet up times to suit.

we can easily modify the friday route to go Hawes -> Sedburgh -> Kendal then up the fantastic A6 to Carlisle. that will take 2hrs out of the trip to allow us to make the camp site a bit earlier.

Also can the Ayrshire and Dumfries boys confirm if they are still coming as daytrippers?

if we cut down the friday trip it will make sense to get a good few miles done on saturday so I will be running this route http://goo.gl/maps/Ul8g7.

we will head to Ayr first, so can pick you lot up there, but need the dumfries crew to meet us in Kirkcudbright, or worst case Dalry early doors

What sort of tent are you taking up Alistair?

Personally I was thinking a little 2 man tent, i'm going to have to get it out and check it hasn't rotted as I haven't used in for 2 years, and it was stored in a damp garage for a while. Not sure how ill take my luggage though. My tank bag doesn't fit now as it's a plastic tank. I do have a pair of oxford hang on paniers but haven't tried them on this bike. Ill try them out this week as I am not sure how ill fasten the straps without them being on the underseat exhaust.

I suppose I could always refit the grab rail to my bike as that will help with holding a tent and sleeping back onto the back of the bike with bungee straps.

On the way back, are you planning on riding down the scenic route or the quick route?

I will be taking a 2/3 man tent, a blow up bed and basic cooking stuff......I like my home comforts

if your tent is fecked you can bunk up with me, but thats how roumours start :eek2

fitting the grabrail onto yours will be a good idea as you can then pile all the stuff on the pillion seat, but having no tank bag limits what else you can carry, so paniers may still be needed...........or try and strap the tank back in place with webbing & velcro straps?

the way back was planned to be the scenic route unless the weather is very crap

Oh, yeah, good idea, blow up bed. Ill nick one from my parents for the weekend.

Ill check out my tent and trial fit my panniers tonight see how it goes. Going to have to find a way to avoid scratching the paint and not burning the straps on the underside of the exhaust.

Tent, airbed, sleeping bag, clothes, shoes, toiletries, hair dryer and straighteners....Sounds like a lot of kit to fit on the back pillion seat of a blade though :eek2

ok, latest update.

this is still on with me, Miztaziggy and grumpyfrog riding up some time on friday when they both get finished with meetings.

awgh69 has damaged his wrist [while beating the bishop :shh:  ] so he cant make it :(

the Ayrshire massive are still interested and we will meet them in ayr on the saturday morning and they will join us for the rest of the saturday.

so we just need to finalise the timing for friday so any update on work situation lads?

Ziggy do you think you can go to work on the loaded bike, even if you have take all the luggage into the office when you get there for safe keeping, it will save a hell of a time in getting started off up the road to kirkcudbright.

Been out today and bought myself some presents :)

Got a set of textiles from Nick Noble in Bradford. Saw them advertised on e-bay at a good price £225 for the set, so went today while I was in Bradford for a meeting. He did them for £200 as I bought in the shop and saved on delivery which is top!!

Bought myself a pair of waterproof RST gloves too for £30 and one of those grip mat things to protect my paint work under the panniers with for a tenner.

Im all set now!! :)

Got a really good few weeks lined up. Cadwell on Sunday, Scotland on 16th-18th, Donington on the 20th, York Races on the 24th, Wales meet on the 6th - 8th September, then I am going to book a holiday to Croatia for the 23rd September :D :D

Alistair, I was going to wait until Grumpyfrog decided what he was doing on that Friday before making up my mind. I could possibly go to that meeting on my bike, but I will have work files and other stuff with me and I don't fancy carting it up to Scotland and back for the weekend. The meeting is at a pub in Bradford, so I can't leave my stuff there, ill have to bring it along. If Grumpyfrog was going to be there a little later, I was hoping I could have done my meeting in the car, gone back to the office, picked up the bike and gone from there. Let's see what GF is doing, as you're right it will mean setting off from Settle approx 2 hours earlier if I go straight there.

ah, work files will be a problem, you dont want to be carting them round all weekend.

one option is to take them to the post office in a box and send them to your home address
