Hmmmm....Me thinks I may have another problem

Some of you may know I recently put in new CCT's as the front had started to rattle...Used the sticky info by removing rear cover only etc and me and a mate fitted them without any hassle.
Now....She starts and ticks over nicely...no sign of a rattle, rev's right through the range and I've seen 120ish (Obviously on a local airfield) by way of a quick test run.
Been on a rideout to Stratford today and it feels harsh and rough when accelerating and the vibration is bad...to the point that my thumb & forefinger on the throttle hand were going numb especially around 4-5k rpm.
Still revs ok & tickover is fine....

Q1 :Could the carbs just have gone out of balance..If so could I have caused this when taking off airbox etc (Never removed carbs) ?

Q2 : Could there be another cause that fitting the CCT's may have triggered?

Someone tell me please that its something simple as I can't keep spending money on repairs every month....I have earmarked a set of vacuum gauges on the Bike Show shopping list though

i believe most storms have a vibration period at 4-4.5k revs,mine does vibe at these revs as well

I get bit of numbness after a while at certain point in rev range, never bothered to see where exactly - Haven't balanced my carbs either - but doubt I've done anything to un-balance them.

This said, when I take bike down over Winter for overhaul, that's one thing that will be getting done - just to check they are in balance.

If you're serious about buying some form of Carb Balancing tool at show, see if John Morgan's there - Carbtune.

I was lucky enough to pick up a 'brand new' (about 20 year old but used once) set from Flebay a few months ago, although mine are the older Mercury filled ones 'no longer available' for obvious reasons. That one slipped through e-bay! Ended up paying nearly as much as a 'new' set but they're worth it and are just like brand new.

The new version is same principle but has S/Steel rods in the tubes to gauge the levels. Talking to the manufacturer, they reckon they're probably more accurate than the Mercury ones due the damping effect of the weight of the rods.

They're maybe not the cheapest guages available but they are one of, if not 'the' most accurate, barring fancy electronic ones.

Needle type gauges are OK but IMO the needles tend to dance around way too much to be very accurate. It's also probably a good idea to check each gauge on same vacuum o/l first to make sure they all read the same, which is more messing about!

They're the sort of thing that doesn't get used very often, but worth their weight in Gold when you need 'em.

Oh, and if you do buy one, pay the £7 extra for the 4 column one over the 2 column one - that way you can check anything apart from a CBX - LOL

Q1 Answer:-No your carbs are not going to all of a sudden go out of balance with general use, although balancing them could be a good idea.

You could check that all the hoses are attached correctly to the bottom section of the airbox, as Chaz had that problem, see below:-



Q2 Answer:- Apart from what I've suggested above, I can't think of anything else.

For balancing your carbs I use one of these, after a kind member from here suggested this. It's simple but effective:-

I realise he's listing this for Kawasaki's, but I'm pretty sure it's the same tool. You could always email him to double check

How much did you take apart when replacing the CCT's?
Were the carbs removed? did the TPS sesor get unplugged? are the plugs fitted correctly and the caps in good nick.
Just a couple of other ideas. Personally I would be going back over what ever bits I had disturbed during the tensioner change over.

The TPS is the 'Throttle Position Sensor' and iirc it's mounted between the two carbs. You only normally need to remove the wiring plug from it if you want to remove the carbs, but still worth checking, as Pete suggests

I used to find my Korg Monopoly rigged up through a PA was good at producing "variable bass tones" (especially when used in polyphonic mode with a slight detune, for that random phasing effect) until Reason came along, with its programmable bass generator.

Still, this is now seriously off-topic - should we have a new thread in General, "What can you make a sex toy with?" ??
