cam chain

is there a way of telling if your cam chain is knackered or have you got to change cct first to see if that cures problem..cheers

Yes
Just take the timing & cam covers off and check the timing alignment. If you get the timing marks on the flywheel aligned and the the marks on the cam chain sprockets are way off it's probably time for a new chain. A few degrees off is okay though.
