Newish rider, Different bike, problems already!

Post by doc69j »

I have recently got a VTR1000 1997. Great bike to ride, my question is does it have a restrictor? When it reaches 100MPH get massive power loss. :( It feels like a flat spot but cant push through it. Doesn't seem to have a flat in any other gears.

Any ideas greatly appreciated. :x

Only thing i can think of is that i was told the plugs/carbs/jets can get shitty if bike is has too much fuel pushed in. I did stall and flood it a couple of times when picking it up from the garage!

What are the revs at the flat spot and does it go through those revs in the other gears?
I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.

Hay Doc
:D Welcome Aboard :D
It could be a few things Bud. We've had damaged diaphrams in the petrol lock, vacuum tubes put on the wrong fitting, cam timing out by 180 degrees, crappy old fuel or even the timing cog one tooth out from when changing a cam chain tensioner. It could even be jetted wrong. It's quite common to put some juicey pipes on, rejet, and then put the pipes back to std when it's sold and not worry about changing the jetting back.
Give us some more info about the bike and we'll see what we can come up with.

Took it out for a spin to try and narrow the prob. Smooth through all the gears at all of the revs. 6th gear @ 6000rpm is 100mph aprox, massive power loss like a flat spot. keep cranking the throttle and it does pick up eventually and good to about 140 ish!

What could cause the flat?? any ideas??? 8O

That do’s sound like the valve timing being 180 deg out im sure it’s been posted b4 and they said it’s a loss of power at about 6k revs

The only other thing that hasn’t been mentioned that could do it is if the breather in the filler cap it blocked or partially blocked this can restrict fuel flow and could cause the bike to run lean at them revs try a run with the cap open
just not with a full tank

This is what I got from roger (all hail roger) from revolution racing on how to set your timing
But if you go though the steps first without removing or undoing anything you can check if it’s out first

VTR CAM TIMING PROCEDURE

WITH BOTH FRONT CYLINDER AND REAR CYLINDER CAMSHSHAFTS REMOVED (Starting from scratch)

1) Turn C/shaft until FT appears and lines up with the mark on the cover
2) Fit FRONT CYLINDER Exhaust camshaft with the mark FE on the exhaust camwheel level with the c/head and at the front of the bike with the cam chain tight - RIP TIE the chain to the wheel
3) Fit FRONT CYLINDER Inlet camshaft with the mark FI on the camwheel Level with the C/head and to the rear of the bike - RIP TIE the chain to the wheel
THE CAM LOBES WILL NOW BE POINTING AWAY FROM EACH OTHER
4) Fit the cam caps and CCT - CUT THE RIP TIES

5) TURN THE C/SHAFT ANTI CLOCKWISE 270 DEGREES until RT appears and lines up

6) Fit REAR CYLINDER Exhaust Camshaft with the mark RE on the camwheel level with the c/head and at the rear of the bike with the cam chain tight - RIP TIE chain to wheel
7) Fit the REAR CYLINDER Inlet cam with the mark RI on the camwheel level with the c/head and pointing to the front of the bike -RIP TIE chain to wheel
THE CAM LOBES WILL NOW BE POINTING TOWARDS EACH OTHER
8) Fit cam caps and CCT - CUT THE RIP TIES

I am just at the better stage of my rebuild (the bit where you put all back together with "shiny bits" ) :D :D
This will be a great help, as it was the only bit i had concerns about getting right first time 8O

Thanks
