fork seal woes

after a very drawn out process changing my fork seals, I finally got them on today.

After I lowered the bike off the stands, the forks took the weight nicely and then I noticed a little dribble of fork oil coming from the dust seals. Leaking worse than ever?????!!!

Has anyone had this happen straight after fitting new seals, and any ideas of what I could do short of pulling them off and rebuilding them from scratch again?

Read my previous workshop post about fork seals mate, had same probs, some new seals are slack and do leak, 1 tension spring as opposed to 2,check my previous post for seal part no's,wont apply to everyone but did me .

Be carefull not to damage anything, to double check they are indeed leaking,knock up the fork protecters , prise up the dust covers , dry in there around the seals with cotton buds or similar,lower bike and watch if oil is by-passing seals.
If you said 1 new one was leaking ,you maybe damaged it,but if both are leakin looks like you've same prob as i had.
The good thing is ................you'll do them in half the time next time

Thats the worst bit - I read all that and got them from from the same place. The parts were pyramid as well. But I have binned the packaging now and didn't check those codes. What an butt!

I'll shift the dust seals and have a look but I'm not too hopeful. I let them bed in overnight and just gave them a good bounce and both are trickling out still.

Did pkn replace them for you free? Cos I reckon that counts as a faulty part. Oh and you mentioned that the number was also on the oil seal so I should be able to check that when I clean it out...I hope?

It was only 1 i needed,cos mate had gave me a new one,pkn pyramid did replace it free of charge,but dont think it's there fault.He only had 1 at the time,cos the previous ones he sent were EXACT same as the honda ones i bought.
Honda would not change the genuine oil seals i bought from them,they agreed something was not right,that they were slacker than the pattern part,but couldnt explain it.In my opinion they wernt very helpfull,kinda implied my forks wernt standard,which they are.
Forget Honda part no's and equivalent, it's all to do with the numbers stamped on the top of the seals ,take the numbers from the top your original seals,this is the numbers you need to qoute when ordering new ones,and if the seals you are replacin have 2 tension springs make sure you get same

Just got the forks off the bike and can read the numbers and their very similar to the number you gave (54 instead of 55 and a 2 at the end, nok 41 54 11 2)

Will contact pkn and tell them I had the same problem and hope for the best.

Also I cant remember for sure - but I think the old seals only had the one ring. But they were really tight in the hole, (I mean REALLY tight!) and the new ones kept popping out until I put the retaining clip in. This could be nothing but I'll give an update as soon as pkn reply.

It's a tricky one mate.........he could only locate 1 for me, he's maybe got more now.
I found him very helpfull ,sent me it at no cost,cos id already bought from him.
Strictly speaking ,there is nowt wrong with the part pkn supply,,or indeed main Honda dealer as i bought from both,and both were identical........or is there

I just thought Honda could've been more helpfull ,never mind a refund,just investigated it instead of muttering "strange".

the lovely man from pkn - nik. has given me a refund for them oil seals. No problem whatsoever and he is happy there is a problem with these seals in particular.

He also said he would give me a shout when he gets the other type of fork seal in. (although I fear it might be too late by then).

Can't argue with that

so you can buy with full confidence from PKN on ebay.

Unfortunately bike still not fixed - aw balls!

Yes,he's a top guy, i got new seal at no cost delivered next day,....thing is..if he agrees there is somethin wrong with the seals,why wont Honda ,,exact same seal made by same manufacturer.

Only advice i can give,is wherever you get them,ask them to confirm they have a spring fitted both top and underneath.
It really is a strange one

...,i dont know,but is it poss some storm owners are getting the seals with only 1 spring ,and they are ok with no oil loss

....on friday, got em fitted saturday afternoon and they were perfect.

While I was at it I thought i'd drop the forks 5mm in the yoke and add 1 preload on the back end. Standard settings and it feels incredible.

I'm going into corners too slowly now! I get all prepared for a big lean angle and end up hardly tilting it!

Is the back end spacer worth doing now cos it feels really good?
