Air Filters & Odd Noises

Post by Wildfire »

Sure I read somewhere in the Haynes manual that there are 3 filters in the airbox...Obviously the main one and 2 tiny triangular shaped ones that fit into the recess where the carb vents connect.
I know mine doesn't have them....Is this likely to make any difference ??

Bike seems Ok but then I havent ridden another Storm to compare against?

Also mine has an odd noise ....Like a hollow echo/ knocking when riding..CCT's have been changed recently, oil level is Ok, and it doesnt seem like drivechain noise.
I know the fairing can amplify any noises a little and there are no problems with the running. Only seems noticable under load and its not the tappety valve clearance noise.

Any ideas anyone :?:

Not trying to be funny, but I don't suppose Honda fitted them out of whimsy  so I guess they will make some diffrencve to something sometime.

Can't imagine what the noise is- its a process of elimination I think.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Hi matey,

Can't shed any light on the knocking I'm afraid, but can confirm the 3 filters. Item 10 on the fiche.

And from the Haynes manual.

If the bike was running OK before without them, I wouldn't worry about it.

Perhaps someone on here has 'spare' ones they don't need so you could fit them and see what difference it makes if any.

AndyC had lotso bits going, his post is here:

Had my box in bits earlier this year 8O ,there were no No. 10 filters as in the drawing RSV posted, just acouple of triangular cover caps.
Checked my Haynes manual (after the job as usual!)& it shows the filters, mines a 2000 model ,no hollow knocking noises.

If I remember rightly the Sub air filters are for the rocker-box breather pipes. Any gases being vented from the engine are put back into the air-box. When they are removed unfiltered air can enter the air box from outside and obviously any dirt/grit in the air and could cause premature wear of the engine/carbs.
K&N filters come with some blanking plates/caps to cover up the vents and stop any dirt getting in, the gases from the breather pipes are just vented to the outside world and bugger the environment
I would suggest either replacing the sub air filters or blank off the vent holes to stop any contaminants. That way you'll keep the engine and carbs in better nick for longer.

Sorry should have posted the correct answer sooner but I thought pigeons were funnier at the time
PS did you find an answer for the knocking yet?

Parts 6 and 7 in the pic above. I've been told that I may get a better throttle response by swapping their positions over.

Good idea or not?

Dunno about that mate,

I guess they're different sizes, for a reason...

Doubt it would do any harm swapping them over and seeing what difference it made, if any.

Not sure that you'd still fit the filter in with them swapped over, wouldn't the longer one stand too proud?

Give it a go and let us know.

Few on here have swapped the trumpets or velocity stacks which ever you wanna call em there job to maximise the velocity of air in your air box which supposed to increase power and torque through the rev range and say its slightly better iirc you either swap the front with the back or put the same size trumpets in ie 2 long ones or 2 short ones, im sure someone will come along and tell you there results.

I tried it today and it does seem to pick up a touch quicker! As long as it isn't going to do any damage I'll leave it in there for a while and see how it goes.

Still makes me jump when i get pops back through the airbox lol!

no it wont do any damage infact you can buy velocity kits designed to increase torque and power with a start price around £220 lol 8O
