STARTER MOTOR TURNING WRONG WAY

Post by Jaglifter »

Friend of mine has a TL1000S. Been stood for ages. Tried to start it up - dead as a doornail.

Lots of fiddling about plus new solenoid and battery later we get the starter motor to work, but its trying to turn the motor backwards. This just results in lots of useless whirring.

I've vaguely heard somewhere that starter motors can reverse polarity, but I'm getting old and may have dreamed it :? !

Can anybody help please?

Getting a bit desperate - going to have to take it to a shop soon

Are you sure (if the battery has been charged by your mate) the battery was connected to the charger the right way around :?:

A friend of mine many years ago charged a very dead battery, connecting it to the charger the wrong way round and it actually charged up in reversed polarity :!:

Well............ despite all the advice from the bike shops around Swindon, I can categorically say that this can happen.

Having taken the starter motor to pieces, cleaned it with brake cleaner and compressor and reasssambled, it now works as it should.

Only explanations I can think of are either: the current was "leaking" through crud or contact so that direction was reversed, or the body had moved relative to the brushes.

Very wierd!!

P.S. Thanks Sirch. I tried what you suggested, but it also did it with two brand new batteries, and its not possible to activate the starter solenoid unless its connected the right way round.

We did try it on a car batterry and it does rotate in the opposite direction if you reverse the current flow (as it should).

Glad too hear you've got to the bottom of the mystery JL :!:

A bit of a weird one though as you say :!:

Chris.

PS. After all that did it start :?:

Thanks Timbo and Sirch. Starter now works fine.

The TL is an impressive engine. Pity its in such a crap chassis. How can a company which manages to produce the GSXR come up with a turkey like that??!!
