Might be rejoining the V-twin fold...

Post by firestorm996 »

Hi all

Well it's official...my Z750 is on ebay as I've fancied a change for a while. I was all set to buy my mate's Fazer 1000 but after much deliberation I've come to conclusion that I want another twin. I've enjoyed having a 4cyl for a couple of years but increasingly I find that the bike only really comes alive when I'm caning it. When I just want to bimble along all the character and soul just evaporates...Plus I really miss the sound of a v-twin.

Once it's sold (not sure how long that'll take) I'll be on the lookout for.....a BUELL!!! Yeeeharrr!!!

Yeah getting off a storm most IL4's are gonna feel gutless. When the first Gixxer 1000 came out the press were harping on about how torquey they were, twins were dead etc etc. After a race meeting at Oulton I got a go on one, very nice but there was no real torque to speak of, it was all at high revs.

When I got my zed, my previous bike had been a 501cc single and it had been about two years since I'd had a twin. So I was happy with the power it had for quite a while until my riding style eventually changed to make use of the top-end a bit more. Now that I ride it differently I notice the lack of grunt on every ride. One of the things I love about twins is you can just chug along and enjoy the sound when you're not in the mood for riding quick (and for me that's quite a lot of the time).

Hi Neil,

Good to hear you'll soon be back in the saddle of a V-Twin again. (Q Lee!).

How did you find the Z750 on rear suspension?

Mate of mine has an '07 model, says it's twitchy as hell in 3 figures, apparently the bike is bomb proof appart from the sh1t shock (and of course the finish).

Someone told him that a ZX10 shock goes straight on and will sort the HS handling out pretty well. It being quite a short wheelbase it's obviously going to be a tad twitchy at HS anyway.

If I was after a naked IL4 I'd have considered the 750, but (unless things have changed), when I was looking, they only did the 'in yer face' orane on the thou :(

Hiya

Can't really comment on the rear shock situation, mine has had an Ohlins shock since I bought it. I'm whacking the std one back on prior to selling it but I doubt I'll get chance to ride it first.

Even with the ohlins (set up by Roger @ Revolution) it's still a flighty little bugger because of the short wheelbase, wide bars and the riding position which puts you aggresively over the bars. At real world speeds it's fine though, you almost just 'think' it into a turn, it really is effortless and I like that. If you have a silly moment though and nail it up to 120+ especially if you're cranked over a bit, you better get ready for the headshakes. On the top speed day after switching from bridgestones to 2CTs my first two runs were high 140's while headshaking enough through the timing gate that people thought I was off. Third run...grip the tank with my knees and put no pressure at all through the bars...no headshakes. But it's not easy to put no pressure through the bars on a nekkid bike..plus your body acts like a sail which probably exaggerates the rear shock deficiencies.

The finish has been fine on mine, no worse than on my storm anyway (in that the engine paint has corroded off in places!)

Cheers Neil,

Another mate of mine merely leant across the back o' the Kwak while we were at the Manx last month and the rear end wallowed, looked to be way too soft and twas on standard settings.

Matey's '08 Blade by comparison was very firm.

If he keeps it, think he's likely to replace it, but he's likely to get a 2nd hand ZX-10 shock than owt tasty.

Yeah the options are no doubt out there but largely unknown due to there not being a huge owner group in the UK. The US are pretty big on the Z1000 but they only get the faired Z750S over there so many of the parts are different.
