CCT's automatic or manual ???

Post by firestarter1977 »

hi all

my first real post here so this might not be in the correct section.

right i have been and had a look at a P reg storm. its got SH up until 8k ago think its done approx 24k miles. it started second press from clap cold ( the bat was flat from the alarm and he didnt know i was going to look at it ) and i heard no rattles from the engine at all. that said i belive it to be on the original CCTs.

i have read there are manual and the standard auto CCTs and wondered what would be best to fit as a matter of course if i got the bike. also i wondered if there was anything else i should look out for on the bike before i bought it.

looking at the CCT removal advice here i rekon i can do that myself so am not too worried just want to fit the best item really.

all up the bike looks as though its been well looked after its just i dont know much about the faults they have.

any advice will be greatly appreciated

Ive got same mileage , and still on probably the original cct's :!:

Some folk have fitted Ape's manual cct's ,others fitted standard Honda items, and a few have modified the standard Honda items so that if you were unlucky enough for a spring to break ,it is modified so the camchain cannot jump and cause damage :!:

The guys that done it believe its the best option ,as Honda designed it to have a spring ,whereas the manual one doesn't.

Another thing you could check is the reg/rec, as apparently these can go , what you are looking for is a Finned item, to aid cooling ,as the original Honda one has no fins.
You would have to take the tailpiece off to check , its mounted on the R/H/Side.

Shock/swingarm suspension linkage bearing/s can corrode if not greased (no grease nipple) - listen for squeaks - then again if it doesn't squeak it could be seized!

Starter motor also vulnerable to corrosion on the front of the engine - check under rubber boot on the starter to see the terminal is not rusted (vaseline HT grease is good for prevention) and seal/fibre washer into the motor is okay.

OE early RegRect is a part waiting to fail - apart from that tough and fun ol' bird

cheers for the advice guys. I looked at another today and bought it lol.

W reg in metallic blue, remus high level cans, braided hoses, rear seat cowl, lower fairing. Hpi clear almost 12 months mot. 14500 miles, £1600 .
I think i will fit manual cct s and do the rr mod first then look at greasing the shock later, it moves fine with no noise at the moment so i guess not urgent.

Any thing else i should cover ?

I had absolutely no problems with mine form 8,000 miles to 37,000, when the CCT when pop. Thought it would never happen to me etc etc. Regulator also went a bit after.

So, now have manual CCT's and a replacement regulator. Replacing other bearings etc is pretty easy and cheap anyway, as is greasing the suspension (although you do have to dismantle it as no nips)
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

That's the mod I have done to mine :!: If you've not already you can read all about it here:-

Again if you've not already seen it (rear suspension info):-

I can't really add to your question as most things (if not all) have already been covered.

It sounds like you got yourself a very good deal :!: :D

thanks for the advice and links guys.

have got an r1 regulator here ready to fit , will sort the suspension linkage over xmas and fit grease nipples.

will look into the manual ccts as i think they will be a good thing so i am guessing if you can afford them go for the manual ccts ?
