lower fairing heat protection

Post by firestarter1977 »

hi all, right just sent the lower fairing off for paint . It had bubbled i thought it was a bad paint job but the guy said its possibly the heat passing through the fibreglass and making it bubble. Has anyone used that silver bubble wrap to line the fairing to reflect the heat?

Thanks for any advice

regards mark

Yeah, I've had both.

My Sharkskinz fibre painted one was lined with it and my paint never had any heat stress.

My Skidmarx one is plastic not fibre and even though it sits much clsoer to the exhaust doesn't seem to need any of it.

Mine was lined with a silver tape product, looked like gaffa tape, but thicker.

mine bubbled the paint big time, smelt really bad too! put some of the silver adhesive stuff in there and made it worse if anything. Got a couple of good quality soldering mats in there now but still gets hot to the touch.

probably can buy some matting but for the sake of £10 down B&Q for a couple of big ones I'm not sure if it's worth the effort trying to find some....

What about buying one of those rubber oven gloves? cut it to shape, evo stick it in place, should cure the heat transfer problem.

Hi All,

I searched and the nearest I found is this.

My exhaust touches the belly pan. I've since cut out a large piece with a dremel. I want extra protection and I thought about some of that heat reflective tape.

Would this do? It's not goign to be touching the exhaust, but it's going to be pretty close

I'm not sure the silicone glove would do! ;-)) Great idea though... if not I'll buy some...ouch..

When you think about it, if the bellypan gets that hot from being close to the ex pipe, it's no wonder that the rear shock linkage fails....

I'd thought about making a little heat shield from some ally sheet to keep them cooler- haven't got round to it yet, though.

It's an aftermarket pipe so it's closer to the belly pan than a OEM pipe. But it's certainly a thought... mine better not fail!

When I repainted my lower fairing I lined it with a with heat proof mat before replacing . I got it of e bay, expensive but comes in a large square.
I laid it over the inside, marked around the fairing and cut to shape. I stuck it to the inner with evostick and sealed the edges with a seam sealer product used in the automotive repair industry. Still as good as new now and looks good as it hides all the inner fairing.
I actually put it on a topic on here some while ago but cannot seem to find it now.

This all sounds far too much like a smutty euphemism......
