The offending article...........

Post by Seeker 77 »

Well, not being one to give up i kept at my old TL engine and after the help of the local Ducati dealer (!), i split the cases and was confronted by this:

It appears to be the only damage, even the oil pump and the input shaft are fine - god knows where the tooth is!

Going to try and get a new gear for it cheap and throw it on ebay. Then it is only a case of when i can go and pick up the replacement :biggrin :biggrin

Mark,
I still find that strange for both gear boxes to go the same way :!:

Well when i fix this one and get the other one out we shall find out what is wrong with that one!! I wonder whether it is something i do? I do use the engine to brake a lot, and don't use the clutch at all on the upshifts but that surely wouldn't trash two gearboxes!!?? It looks like i may have to buy an entire secondhand box just to get a decent thrid gear :mad2

I can't see it being somthing that you do. My cousin has got 2 TLSs and abused both of them for thousands of miles. He has one being rebuilt now after 50k of abuse. I'm talking clutchless up and down changes. Using the rev limmiter to as a quick shifter/clutchless changer.

What's the problem here? You've plenty of teeth left on that gear.

I’ve got to say bud that its not the first time I’ve heard of the gear box fu*king up on a TL
:o
Before I’d decided on a storm I was seriously considering a TL but was put off by reports of the dreaded cracking frames and weak gearbox on some forums
Had a word with the b/in-law about it and apparently its usually the second gear that go’s south

My TLS was fine after 32000 miles. And it was completley standard apart from the cans.

Suppose you win some and loose some?

Just have to put it down to experience. I'm glad I had one, got it out of my system, but wouldnt want another

Yeah Chris, youre right.

They've all been recalled. The frames supposed to be checked round the head stock, replaced if badly cracked or a brace kit fitted as a matter of course.

Anyway, it'll accelerate faster, one tooth less.

While you're there do a couple of other ratios, too.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

There is nothing like finding out you have a drastic problem and have everyone take the piss :biggrin :biggrin

Well i have found a generous bloke on ebay who is going to sell me a complete gearbox for £80 delivered so thanks for that mate, good deal i reckon. Spoke to Crescent today who wanted £108 for just one gear cog :eek2 :eek2

Should have the old girl back together and on ebay before the Summer interest in biking wanes and the rain arrives!

Anyone interested............................ :!:

swap you a lovely 98 vtr in yellow for the tl? JAC cans carbon hugger and front gaurd, polished rims brand new chain and sprocket iridium double bubble, braided lines, under tray. 30k miles....

go on you know you want to!

if you dont fancy the swap how much are you going to be looking for the tl?
