Heating Issues!

I have a 02 storm that is overheating at lower speeds. If i stay at a lower speed the fan is in risk of coming on. I've taken the thermostat out and still no luck. I've had it to the shop and been told that the head gasket is fine. I've also taken the water pump cover off and turned the bike over. Everthing looked good to me, all i want to do is ride this thing. Please help as i can't stand another weekend without riding. Thanks boys!

Do you mean the temp gauge goes quite high before the fan comes on? Thats normal.

The fan will come on if i keep the bike at a lower speed of say 50 or 60 kph! The fan comes on at 220 F, i have to keep my speeds up in order for the bike to stay at a lower temp. It heats up way to fast when the speeds stay at anything lower than 90 kph. If i was to keep my speed at 50 or 60 kph the fan will come on! Any help is appreciated!

What part of the world are you in? Have you had the bike a while and it's only just started doing this or is the bike new to you?

I'm in Canada and bought the bike from a buddy two weeks ago. I put 600 miles on the bike in three days with no isssues to speak of. Temp stayed aroung 175 f when cruising at speeds of 100 -110 kph. Right now my bike heats up WAY to fast when doing anything under 90 or 100kph. Going through speed zones with a speed limit of 50 or 60 kph my fan should not be in risk of coming on! Any thoughts and thanks for any help.

If sure heads and thermostat and you have checked the impeller on the pump and the sensors are functioning as they should, I would use a coolant flush leave in and ride 20/30 miles empty rinse then when fully flushed out use a silicate free coolant additive pre mix or use a neat one with distilled water, the rads may be partially blocked, you could use compressed air but would be cautious or another alternative is take to a radiator repairer as they use stronger cleaning agents!!

whats 175f convert to cel. mine runs at 90cel around town drops to 85cel. at long 100klm cruises :plainsmile

175F = 79C which is perfectly normal, what is air temp where are you?

the fan shouldn't come on till over 100 degrees C. mine comes on at 104-5 and goes off again at about 100.

Has anyone recently replaced the coolant? its not unheard of for the refill to cause an airlock and leave effectively one rad doing all the work. Remove the right rad filler cap, run the bike until warm then squeeze the left rad coolant pipes to see if the level drops or not. I had a small stone put a tiny hole in my left rad and it took some time to fill and bleed.

the air temp at 35cel the bike will run at about 95cel no probs

Thanks for the info and help boys! This is my first twin, i have over 100 000 kilometers all on inline fours. Twins tend to run a little hotter i guess. Thanks again!

A point to remember about the storm......the radiators are at the side of the engine, not in front of it like just about every other bike. You wont be getting much cool air to them riding that slowly.
