Word of warning !

Post by Beamish »

Keep all your tools/side stand plates/fag lighters etc well and truly strapped down if they usually live under your seat. Why you ask....... Well one stray screw driver blade bit (like you find in Honda kits) managed to get out of the bag through a little slit, then work its way under a poorly secured battery cover and right over the pos + and - tive battery connectors 8O Fizz, fizz burny, burny, plastic melt, battery melt, undertray melts, FI light comes on and engine dies :eek2 Me and the Zipster trying to prise this red hot electrically charged metal object from the battery terminals, as its burning through various bits of the SP,must have been a right sight  :whatever. I am a lucky bast as the only visable damage is two holes in the undertray and a unsightly melt on the battery top. Prob a SP only fault as the battery sits on its side with the terminals pointing backwards. I have ridden a good 200+ miles since and all is well.

Ah, that explains the caption on one of your Olivers Mount pictures.

Sounds like you were lucky, but is a good warning on loose metal bits under the seat.

I count myself very lucky. The Honda tool kit pouches are pretty thin and I only discovered the slit after this occured :mad2 . Oh well you live and learn eh! :wink2

That reminds me of an incident many years ago when the local firm I worked for had a "fleet" of mini vans. Me being the youngest I always had the old one, it was forever playing up and the jump leads were always lying on the floor somewhere. One day the bosses brothers van ( A Simca ) was in for some surgery ( 100th gear linkage repair!!!) and he needed my wheels, so I was dropped off at the site, all my gear was removed from the back and off he goes.
The gaffer came to pick me up later that night and said ffs don't ask Les what happened with your van today. Me being the youngest, had to ask when we got back to the workshop :wink2 . It turns out that when he got to the junction in the middle of town, a section of ss tubing that had been in the back of the van with my tools had been liberated to roll about unchecked  and when he stopped at the junction it had rolled over the small lip behind the seat and landed on the battery terminals that were not covered because of the performance in starting it most days. He, on hearing the crackling :wtf: and seeing the welding type arc flashes :eek2 behind him had decided to bale out at the main junction. Just like a scene from back to the future.

Cheers

:eek2 That could have been a lot worse guy's :!:

Good advice Jim.

The lose object doesn't have to touch the earth (-) terminal of the battery either if it's already earthing on a metal part of the bike
