Possible New VTR owner requires some advice

Post by jalum »

Hello all

I am in the position of having to buy a new bike folllowing being the victim of some un-cleared deisel and a very rainy day! Following an unfortunate incident of so called 'bike tipping' which ripped the rad and fuel tank of my Hornet which added to the cosmetic damage of the slide the truty CBF is 'beyond economical repair'

So...

Started looking around and have found a 53 VTR 1000f which is really tidy has a full service history 20k on the clock but...it's been dropped/slid and there is some fairly minor damage along the right hand side.

Slightly bent bar end
Scratched mirror
Scrapped through to the black on the front fairing
Some small scratches along the rest of the body work
Slight scratch to clutch cover, just chipped of the black paint really
Small rip in seat cloth
Slight scratching on exhaust cover

I'm trying to be objective about this but I've managed to get them down to 2250 and with what I got for my hornet it wouldn't be too much extra, as I say its in good nick other than this, low milage good tyres etc. It's seriously under market value as far as `i can see and although it's going to need a decent hugger (any suggestions>?) and i'd have to get my scotoiler fitted (is the same one I took off my Hornet going to fit>?)
I wouldn't have to fork out too much more.

I'm thinking it's too good to pass up, it;s a lot of bike for the money, I could live with and repair the cosmetic damage over time, a friends husband is a body work type dude...sooo

...just wanted some feedback and to see if anyone thought this could be too good to be true or if it's worth it?

Thanks loads for any input or advice

Greetings to all things Storm related

http://www.parkers.co.uk/motorbikes/use ... deriv=5973

Honda VTR1000 F-3
2003/53
Original Price £6,499
Independent Dealer £3,045
Private Good £2,675
Private Poor £1,860
Part Exchange £2,185

As for the damage, plenty of parts on ebay (handy as for the series 97-07 run most cosmetic components are the same, obviously plastcs can be different colours). Depending on the severity of the damage to plastics they can be easily DIY patched and touched up quite cheaply. As a comparison, a new panel from http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk will set you back about £155 and be sitting down if you get to hear the price on a new rear seat plastic cowling :wtf:

Let us know if you go for it, and post some pics

Seems expensive to me. There are plenty of super bikes that come up on this forum, put a post up and you'll get some interest.

If you consider a super bike (warby) was sold on here for close to that price, it was magnificent.

It's going to cost you the best part of 300GBP to get that back to nice, unless you live with the scratches.

But then it's also got 20K on the clock which put's in near average.

Winter is nearing, unless you are in a hurry, for that money you could get a non crashed one. It might be older, so smaller tank, but my advice is hold and keep looking....
No bike (yet).

Hi there-you might be better posting this in the "Bike chat" section mate.

As regards the Storm-its sounds like a plan. I'm just in the process of looking at a similar project with a Fireblade.

As for the price-imo it's too high. I wouldn't be wanting to pay much more for a bike of that year and that mileage in standard undamaged fettle. The butt has fallen out of the bike market at the minute and you could have a really sorted storm for that kind of money, maybe a couple of years older.

The damage doesn’t sound hard to fix. Is it insurance registered? If so that’s going to effect the value when you want to sell it down the line.

There are LOADS of decent VTR's about for the money at the minute. Good luck

yeah am in a bit of a hurry, young baby means my wife really needs our car, bike was daily ride! I thought i'd done some homework and thought £2000ish would have been a good price for the model, it's the updated version and whilst cans and other mods would be great I don't think my insurance would go for it. Only been riding 4 years... What kind of sensibe offer do you think they might go for, it's a dealer and it's been reduced from £2550.

Thanks again

cheers Cuppa...yup, i have an 02 for sale with 18k on the clock, one person on the site has shown some interest once i return it to near standard, so i'd be giving him first shout, i will be leaving braided front hoses, undertray, sorted front forks, digi gear indicator, powder coated wheels, as well as swing arm, and fork lowers, if you look in the for sale section you'll see my original post.

i'm hoping to have the bike ready within the next week or so as i've had a lot of things to remove, and i'm now waiting on the delivery of new brake disk bolts for the front.

the bike will have a years MOT, tax till may and probly new tyres as i don't think it will pass an MOT with what it's got. i'm looking for about £1900 - £2000 for it as is.
cheerz

Bloody hell :wtf: time to check the shed one thinks haven’t sold mine few still there

Was thinking of it earlier in the year and getting a RSV factory but put myself right off them after finding out all the problems with them. what you get with Italian exotica
Was thinking of £2100 for mine with all the goodies and less than 20k on the clock
Think you could find this ones a money pit
If I was you I’d go for Kev’s as a well looked after example

mined you i am a super bike :D :D :D

Ahhh gutted, thought despite the cosmetic damage i'd found a goodun and if i could have knocked a few hundred off i'd have a decent bike. I'd compared this to other dealer bikes same age and some private and seen that they were much more.

Really am after an 02 or later so I thought this might be the one. I'm in south east Essex, Kev's sounds perfect as he obviously knows what he's doing and if it's returned to it's default settings then shouldn;t be a big deal to insure.

This is looking like the bike for me, don;t want a sports bike, don;t really want loads of mods but it's a daily ride and as such I now want something which will last me a good while.

Thanks for all your help, I guess i'll have to keep looking, shame as it's local and very tidy...apart from the damage!

have a look
