Post by pariah »

just bought set of micron cans . Thing is as there alloy, there not coming up that good as I would have liked  If possible I was considering renewing the main can sleeves .
Do these allow for renewing of the main sleeves , if so does any one know where and how much this would cost.
Also , does any one know any good products that might clean them up better.
My other idea if would it work is , now I have the link pipes and hangers would any onther end can of the same size fit :confused

Hi Sirch
I,ve been using Autosol metal polish . It does make a difference but they still look a bit nasty in places though.

I'd suggest the same as Marra seeing as you've only tried the Autosol. A polishing kit can be purchased for around £25 that can be used in an electric drill.

pariah,

You have stumbled across something I have been researching. I have viper cans that are allly and want a mirror finish, before I start it will take a long time and the results will not last if you do not keep on top of it.

Mine were a brushed finish, so I started to wet and dry with around 850 grit, depends on the severity of any marks, one I have removed all the deep marks I use 1000 grit to remove the 850 grit marks and so on with 1200 grit, 1500 grit, 2000 grit and finally 2500 grit. I would never use Autosol metal polish to finish off because this is good for Stainless and other steels, but to compare to the above sandpaper it is approx a grit between 850 and 1000. It's to aggressive. Autosol do an ally polish in a blue bottle, I would recommend going to a chandlers cause we have a yacht and most bits are ally and they do an extensive range of polishes for this material.

Before you ask, you can lacquer the finish, but it will remove some of the mirror finish, but it will keep a good quality finish.

I hope this helps, once the bike is in pieces and had a chance to do my forks I will post pictures.

They weren't the ones on ebay the other week by any chance? Autosol marine shine polish works better than normal autosol when i stubbied and polished my Viper can on the SV. I polished mine using a polishing mop normally used for buffing paint and it worked a treat! Hope the pictures show up ok.

Bazza,
I agree you do have to keep on top of exposed polished alloy, especially if you use the bike all year round.

Is this alloy polish you recommend, in this link below, of Autosol products :?:

That link you posted is excellent

Swing arm's easier than fork legs, as due to the flat sides you can rough it off with a sander, and hand finish.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
