depends what you call a good deal, Im selling Rob Hunters for £30. but can get Exides or Gel but are dearer.
If you get 3 years out of a cheapie thats about it, if you can afford it get a Gel one and the better the cold cranking amps the better but expect to pay £75

My experience with Varta and Yuasa the Yuasa is a much better animal.
I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.

So going by your experience Chaz this battery (NOTE: Neil (Balls) this is the battery used in the later Firestorms which is approx. 20mm lower in height) should be a good price :?:
I wonder if it would be suitable to use in the earlier Storms (perhaps someone who knows about batteries could tell us, may be you can Chaz :?: ), you could put a 20mm packer underneath it to bring it back up to the normal level of the original.

Best price I've found for a Yuasa so far is:-

I looked into fitting a larger battery the last time I renewed mine. The only one I could find suitable was the one for a Varadero, but found it to be iirc 15mm more in height. I have heard of one person fitting this battery, but needed to remove the battery box top cover. Not the best idea IMO, unless you can rig something else up to protect the top of it.

Neil,
The code for an XL1000 Varadero battery is YTX14-BS. I've just found a comparision for the two batteries, see link
http://www.whitedogbikes.com/Maintenanc ... teries.htm

The Varadero battery is to be exact is 16mm higher (according to that chart) than the Firestorm one. It also produces more CCA (cold cranking amps) as Chaz talks about.

Whichever battery you decide to get, I would suggest checking the measurements of your old one first. However I'm pretty sure the measurements in that chart are for the earlier model Firestorm.

HTH,

Chris.

I have a feeling that the old one that came with the bike was a ytx14 that's why the battery cover is missing and I still have the old one in the garage will have a look tomorrow , the 14 is about the same price as a12 to. So it looks like I will get one of those :D

Looking to change mine as well.

I ordered a Yuassa. I wanted to cancel the order the last minute, but was too late.( i had realized too late that i had more important things to spend money, besides the battery, since the current one still works)
The yuassa has arrived, it's at the service shop, but i'm gonna install first thing in spring. I don't think there should be any issues if i keep it like that until then (it's not mounted on the bike yet).

Neil,
That makes sense if your battery cover has already been removed. The bigger battery must make it easier to turn the engine over for starting, especially in cold weather.

Do keep us posted with what you end up getting.

Cheers,

Chris.

Just got the ytx 14 today and its fits perfectly I think you might need to mod a battery cover but as I don't have one I'm not sure if you need to :D , Will let you all know how it performs later all the best balls.
I think with a small mod to the battery box floor you could get the next size up from the 14 in there :eek2

Neil, so does that mean you had a standard size (YTX12-BS) battery in it after all :?: but you have now replaced it with the bigger Varadero battery (YTX14-BS)

The battery you have bought will have been dry charged and will have a shelf life in that state. You could ask the supplier how long that shelf life is.

Providing you've not added the acid to it yet, I don't see that a few more months will affect it.
