Additional Starting Mod

Post by pariah »

Well it took some sorting out, but finally got it sorted and it works a treat. No more cold weather starting problems for me now.
A Bit of alloy channel, wire and anderson connectors plus a booster pack.
Now I just simply plug and play so to speak.

This is the new improved version. Heavy duty cables from a set of jump leads, all connections have been soldered as well so more than up to the job. 175 amp Anderson connectors. It,s wired straight to the + side of the starter relay so it,s protected by the 30 amp fuse. Works a treat as well.

That really is a great system. Thanks for going to the trouble of posting these.

One question, haven't you now specialised the jump pack simply for your bike? Or can you still attached the standard crocadile clips to the adaptor/jumper?

Thread hijack, but related...

What jump starter would you recommend? Halfords have a sale on at the moment but they still seem expensive. I'd rather buy this one as it's a branded name.

this seems neat, (if it's too bulky it'll be left in the garage and I'd like it in the car): http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... start-1000

or

And halfords:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165719
or a cheaper one
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165629

I hada Halfords one before and it faulted. I'm not interested in an aircompressor.. I think the piston is aboutr 10cc's!

Hi gilly.

As for the booster Gilly, theres loads on e bay around the 30 pound mark. Make sure you get the 900 amp model.
The cable connection to the booster was to cut from a set of car jump leads to which one end of croc clips was modifed to make a flat headed terminal. The wire was then soldered on to this end. I then simply drilled a hole in the booster croc clips and simply bolted it straight to them. This still allows me to use the croc clips on car batterys or just plug anderson end into the bike and turn on booster..
If you wasn,t to bothered about having the croc clips on the booster. You could cut these off and have the anderson terminals soldered straight on to the booster cables.
Any probs mate give me a shout .

Oh and to put the icing on the cake, Here,s my emergency portable pack.
This is a simple extension with one end having an Anderson clip fitted , while the other end is fitted with croc clips. I have additional supply of fuses( just in case )and all is stored in a small zipped fastned bag I bought from wilkos for about 2 quid.
Once stored in the bag , I simply put this in my ruck sack and take with me, This way if out , I can just jump start the bike from a vehicle of some one.   Image

It is indeed brilliant.

Go on, make a few kits up for us so we lazy, untalented sod's can simply bolt it on to our bikes battery plus the emergency kit.....

I'll buy the parts, send them to you, you whip them into a kit, send them back, I can bolt them on. I'd pay good money for it.... Cheeky but it's a great idea....

I've been thinking of a far more crude idea for my track bike but this is very much better.....

Gilly.

As you dont use the track bike for every day use. I would have thought that if you got the Anderson connector system fitted to your bike, you could just use the extension with croc clips on the end and just jump start it of your car when you need it. I would have thought that after a couple of laps the battery would have been charged for starting the bike for the rest of the day anyway.
This way you wont need to buy a booster pack. Just buy a cheap set of Jumper start cables and alter these, after all they are at least 2 meters in lenght so more than long enough.

I got this one from ebay in the end, not the cheapest (40GBP with free P&P) but come with a recommendation from Autoexpress (albeit in 06!)

I'm going to have a go at this... love it!

they have some good small starters in jtf for 20 dabs, with compressor.
not arsed about the compressor tbh cos i always carry a tyreweld on the bike.
don't buy their 4a chargers tho, theyre shite lol but what do you want for £6 :/
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Dont want to be the boring negative person but your better off crimping the connectors mate. If you got such alot of current going through the cables the solder got a chance of melting and the connections coming lose.

After saying that thought your prob ok as it will only be a short burst and on a cold day anyway but thought id mention it incase you did have a problem with it coming off in future.

Great idea though, will do something similar with mine cos i hate haqvin to take the seat on and off all the time.

I got fed up of removing the seat at 6 in the morning so came up with this system.

Crimping would be fine for small terminals, however these are large 175amp and that makes them quite large in diameter. Soldering gives greater conductivity than crimping. For the solder to melt , a hugh amount of power would have to go through the system.

The booster looks fine Gilly, croc clips in right location so you wont have much trouble connecting the extensions to them. I will try and get some pics of how I connected them for you. This system is easy to do and I will help to any one that wants to have a go. Just send me a blank e mail (rick1960@tisacli.co.uk)
