Rear subframe overhaul.

Post by Storm Trooper »

Now that I am eventually getting around to doing my CCT's, I got slightly distracted at the rear of the bike at the weekend before I even got to the front.

I decided to overhaul the rear subframe as it had a few bits of rust appearing on it ( mainly underneath the undertray). I thought about getting it blasted and powder coated but was gonna cost £50. Couldn't really justify that on something of which most of is hidden. So decided to get at it with a drill and stripping pad spindle, and some tins of Plasti Kotes finest primer (3 fine coats)and Satin Black (3 fine coats).

Anyhow here are the pics of the progress, but am not gonna get it back on the bike until the cct's are fitted. Just gives more room to work.

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Any other subframes fit straight on?
SP1 or 2?

R1 is a popular conversion- seen several now.

It's just that the standard VTR rear seat surround looks sorta fat compared to newer stuff- does my elbow look big in this?

Dates the bike, IMO.

Something a little pointier and shorter might be nice...... But not the streetfighter pointing its butt at the sky look, thanks very much. No offence to those wot have already etc....

Overall not too long. About 1 hour of prep (sanding) and then cleandown with white spirit. Then about 5-10 mins per coat of Primer. Trick is to leave the specified time between the coats of Primer (about 30 mins) as long as you are keeping it in a warm environment to cure. Light rub down between coats too of fine grit sandpaper helps.

A couple of days to dry properly and then repeat above with the final colour finish. Time between these coats are longer and dependant on the paint.

Again if you can store it in a warm boiler room or similar for a few days to properly cure the paint.

All in about 2 to 3 hours of actual work. Pain in the butt is the all the waiting time in between.
