Bike start fail

This is more of a rant than anything

Picked up my vtr from midland superbikes in market harborough on sat just gone the bike flooded almost imeiatly at my bans even though been ridden for 45 mins previous probs my fault not being used to it the bike behaves fine for 24 hours. Sunday all atempts to start her fail she cranks but splutter for a few moments but that's it she then dies and the batt goes flat I get her started using a trickle charger and retrying Monday is fine. Go to start this morning full choke she has none of it and won't start total repeat of Sunday. I had to use my Subaru for work and was half an hour late as a result of my faffing.

Grrr FFs Honda u make an engine with a shagged came chain and an ability to totally screw itself over yet the problems started in 1998 the bike wasnin production till 2005 and to my utter disbelief u did nothing Honda to correct this issue on earlier models or later ones.

Midland however have been great it's going back Saturday for new battery and alternator.

It's a black art to starting a storm, I never have used full choke on mine even if the weather is cold cause they are tuned rich. During the summer I never use choke.

My process to starting:
-Pull the choke out about 3 mm, so you can just see the choke rod,
-fire her up and keep her turning till she fires, will not go immediately unless its a warm day,
-once she has fired, I will pull the choke out another fraction and keep the started pressed until she runs,
-if she doesn't start, I try again but she will go. DO NOT USE THE THROTTLE
-if you use too much choke or open the throttle she will flood and eventually back fire.
-it's strange but that's how mine likes to be treated.

I did say it's like a black art, others will confirm that.

My starting routine:

Choke out full - no throttle, quick press and start.
Choke in half way after a few seconds, let it bumble for a minute or two
Choke in a bit more, bit of throttle
Off you go

Winter and summer, no problems. The only problem I ever had was in the summer, engine would cut out when stationary if not on the throttle a bit (at lights etc) and then have to be left until it cooled down before it would fire again. Seems ok after it's last service so don't know if a cable prob or not.

1) Choke out full
2) Twist throttle twice
3) Fire up may have to throttle again to get over inital burst
4) Choke in a little then off as it warms up.

my routine

no choke
press starter for a couple secs and let go
leave alone for 20 secs or so
turn her over again and she fires
as she fires pull the choke out full and give her a couple of handfulls ov revs
she then purrs away fine after that.

maybe it just wants servicing proper by someone who knows vtrs?
ive done about 600 mile on mine since it was serviced.
from cold i pull choke out full and press start briefly.
let it idle til it speeds up then knock the choke off and ride it.
from warm / hot i just press start and it fires up np.

the constant flooding? maybe you have incorrect float height in one or both carbs, or a sticking float, worn or dirty float needle?

good that they are sorting the alternator and battery.
make sure you tell them about the fuelling probs!
i'm sure you will!!

thats same as me(with the cold mornings)
then starts with 1 touch when warm.

Lol I love how easy all ur are mine either start first time or not at all.


I'll remember the fueling I'll be telling them on sat I'm borrowing a bike I won't be back till it's fixed.

When i had mine i'd pull the choke right out,....then i'd push it in very slightly (dont ask me why). Press the starter and it would fire up .

same as me but out of 25times of starting mine only 9 have been first time

Choke out full one press and she is going ease off choke after a minite , never fails now the R/R has been replaced
