Tank Dent

Post by vtwin »

Hi, got my storm last week, slowly working through the issues so far:

1. New EBC front discs & pads to cure pulsating brake lever.

2. 15t front sprocket, can actually use 6th now ! Although speedo is waaayyy out !

3. Ordered new standard level link pipes so I can send damaged high level back to scorpion to see if they can repair or replace.

Still got to try and sort out the tank dent though, has anyone any thoughts ? Its about 3 inches long by 1 1/2 wide by about 1/2 inch deep. There is no paint damage and no crease to speak of, its on the righthand top edge roughly in line with the cap.

After this will be CCT's, oil / plugs / filters.

:D

A picture paints a thousand words....

Maybe someone like Mr Dent could "suck" it back up again?

Warning: Potential thread hi-jack!!

Does it show too fast or too slow? when it says 40 what are you actually doing?

I'm thinking of reducing to 15t

get a glue stick dent puller off ebay - about a tenner.
they work sound if you take your time. sometimes get left with a little ripple but not as bad as a ding.

re the 15t - you won't notice the inaccuracy til you get over 60 (mph not age lol)
not that much difference tbh. you can use that gearing commander site to check what it should be reading, and if it really bothers you, get a speedo overlay from egay for a fiver and stick it over the numbers so it reads nearer what it should be.

mine says 91 on my satnav at a ton - i can live with that.
my other speedo was the same.
putting a 14 tooth on didnt make any difference to the accuracy for some reason.
even with a 16 on it's still out.
no more innacurate than any other bike imo

agree.it's probably miles out, depends on how fast it updates and dont think they take into account altitude etc, but i'd rather it show as i'm going faster than the other way. = saves fines!
them speed sensor things on the road are sh1t, they don't work proper with bikes.

on roads where you need to look at the speedo, ie 30, 40, 50 roads, the speedo's accurate enough.

it's always confused me why i can drive at a constant 70 on the motorway but only cover like 45 miles :confused

heres same cheapo dent thing as i got - they work sound on little dings

Good question and a valid point....

I recently did a "Speed Awareness Course" (57 in a 50 oopsies)
Speedo accuracy was discussed. Apparently the will give you 10% margin - not 10%+2 as a lot of people thought.

But, SatNavs:
Marvellous on the straight - very accurate - plotting your distance travelled against the satellites.
But - go on a hill - and your speed is relatively different across the ground compared to tha virtual distance covered in relation to a satellite. If you get what I mean. It's probably minimal - but a SatNav will under-read on a hill...#

...discuss....

Haven't a bracket for my satnav on the Storm, but have one on the TDM (standard gearing) and it goes in both cars. The TDM speedo shows 80 and the sat nav (which I take to be truer) says 71, in the Mondeo if the speedo said 80, the sat nav says 74 and in the XJ8 the speedo would say 79. The Jag speedo is the most accurate to "real" speed that I have ever seen.

If your speedo says 30 - 33 and you still set off the flashing "reminder" signs in restricted areas then it isn't too far out at low speeds. Find a straight road with a 50mph reminder and test it out there too.

Wow, lots of posts !

Ye, I would say the speedo is about 10-15 mph out at 100, 6-8 at 60 and 3-5 at 30. I can live with that !

I had seen those glue stick dent kits but when I read the instructions about using solvent and scrapers to get the glue off I thought I would rather live with dent than lose a chunk of paint !!! Do they actually work ?

if it's just a little perfect ding they work great - assuming the paint isn't broken.
the glue? you just peel it off, rub it with your thumb and it comes off easy.
have a look on youtube - there's a couple of vids showing them used.

if it's a bigger dent you do it in a few goes, working from the outside in, until it's all flat again.
if it leaves a ripple, go over it with wet N dry then tcut and you'll hardly see it.

Lol, yes I had considered that, but the position it is in would have made a sticker look a bit odd.

Anyway I ordered the kit as Benny had suggested, and it has done an amazingly good job, I am just left with a small dimple the size of a 2p. Annoying but way better than what was there before
