de-seaming panels?

Post by benny hedges »

well as i'm ashamed of the rattle can paint job on me bike, hastily botched together to get some summer miles in, i decided to purchase some proper 2 pack paint and do a 1/2 decent job that doesnt run every time i fuel up & crack every time i park in the sun...

got proper spraying gear at work but seeing as i was on a sicknote when i fixed the bike up i thought it would be a bit cheecky to use the booth lol!

one thing i don't like on the storm is the joins in the fairing, where the panels go together...
thing is, iirc it's made of abs so if i use filler to get rid of the seams i reckon it will crack over time & i only intend doing this once...
same with fibreglass resin i think?

anyone got any ideas, apart from plastic welding it all up which will take bloody ages!

thinking of grafting the belly pan onto the top fairing as well so it looks like one piece but obviously i'll have to work out how i can remove it for meddling... probably cut a strip out of the middle or sumat so it screws together underneath?

looking on ebay i found this stuff - made for repairing abs bumpers... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BLACK-PLASTIC-elbow ... lies_Paint

and this stuff that i can probably use with my hilti chemical anchor gun .... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BROKEN-CRACKED-PL ... lies_Paint
that last one they say does most body kit type plastics, dries to make the same material so i might just buy some and try it on my old smashed up fairing?

Try this stuff. We use it in the crash repair industry to stick metal non bolt on panels to the vehicle when replacing with new.

I use this when making up flat pack , once dry you never gonna get it apart with out smashing it. Costs a bit more thanother stuff on the market but will flex and can be over painted.
Oh if you do, make sure you wear gloves as it,s black it will get every where and make you look like you have been working in a coal mine for years. It dont really come off to easy, it will get under yh finger nails and round the side.
Undue your panel fastners , sand down the surface , wipe clean. Now apply this stuff between the panels. Re tighten, wipe off excess and leave to dry. Now simply repshape the panel seams with plastic filler and away you go.

Oh and I forgot to say, should you choose to do it in 2 pack, you can add a flexi additive to your top coat. This additve will allow the pant to flex a little rather than crack.
It,s mainly used on things like car spoilers and plastic parts that tend to flex.

ordered some of that to try on some old panels...
i can use that in an ordinary silicone gun instead of the other kit with the spiral mixing nozzle - i've got a gun to do that but it's a big fker for industrial use and looks like the tubes on ebay are only 50ml little farty ones.

i don't plan on doing the respray just yet - mebe wait til after the wales meet.
panels and tank are already down to the primer so i reckon i can do it over a weekend
