Engine cut out - sprag clutch

Since had my firestorm couple of months now its been 'rough' running on overrun would make like mis-fire and make a mechanical 'crack'

This was intermittant at first but has got progressively worse. When I went on long run in the rain a while back it was running dog rough and felt like down to one cylinder (if that) was struggling along cutting out/rough running, as it dried out it got better.

Also, after pulling a wheelie (off road of course ) it would run rough for a short while after and then clear itself and be ok again

Carbs have been cleaned and did fuel better after this but same problem occurring.

Last 2 weekends out on it its starting to cut out with a mechanical 'crack' starter noise at low speed (mainly on overrun or when blipping it)

Its now doing all time making it unrideable, starts fine, but then blip throttle and thump/crack cuts out (sounds starter motor area)

Whipped off starter teeth look ok - spark mate gonna check it for me tommorow

Could this be a sprag gear problem cutting out engine ?

any help appreciated, bummer was after another month of decent weather/riding before the winter rot sets in !

Have ordered another starter solenoid and kill switch (ebay) to try those out, starter being checked tommorow, should I strip flywheel cover and have at this sprag clutch or do i need remover ?

you need a m22 metric fine bolt to get the flywheel off.
apparently someone is doing them on ebay for £13
and a big adjustable to grip the flats inside the flywheel - you won't get it off by putting it in gear and back brake on, but you might crouton your gbox & clutch lol.
use the proper tool and it's easy/
the sprag gear should only turn in one direction and immediately lock in the other.
look for flats on the rollers and black shite.
might just need cleaning up but i doubt it.
theyre dear to replace from honda as well so have a look on ebay and you might get lucky.

Not quite the same, but mine was running like a dog a while back, would start and tick over fine, but as soon as you put in gear would either misfire or cut out. Other times would start ,run a bit rough and as soon as one hit a few thou revs, crack and engine would cut out. In the end wouldn't even rev properly in neutral without missing or just sounding rough.

Tried cleaning out carbs, new plugs, went right over it. In the end took off sidestand switch and shorted across it - end of problem. New sidestand switch fitted and she runs sweet as. The next thing on my list was the clutch switch on the bars (as they have a habit of causing grief too on my other bike, same as sidestand switch if they get a bit mucky and/or corroded).

Not saying it's the same problem you are having, but you never know, stranger things have happened.....

But my bike ran like a pile of sh*t when I bought it 6 weeks ago. It coughed and spluttered, knocked and cut out in traffic and generally was unbearable below 5000 rpm. From the noises it made I imagined all sorts of major mechanical problems.

I lifted up the tank and found it had a K&N fitted, replaced it with a genuine Honda one and it has run faultless ever since. Reckon the previous owner had not touched the jetting and the bike just didnt like the increased air volume.

Cheers for the help benny, mate had monster adjustable and i had M22 removal tool so flywheel removal was painless as you said.

Spring does look knackered/stretched to me and the flat spots on the bearing and clutch rotor can be seen on photos 2 & 3

do you reckon worth trying to replace sprag spring alone or bite the bullet & replace whole lot

Had already suspected side stand switch and removed that and (no different), just bypassed clutch lever switch as well (wasnt aware of that) just in case. Have ordered another starter solenoid and kill switch as well (ebay). Carbs were cleaned and just checked fuel tank and clean. Air filter (original) bit mucky so will replace that. Its got microns on it and backfires a lot and defo needs re-jetting to suit but that wouldnt explain rough running after a wheelie landing or filling up with petrol (for about 5 mins and then clears itself?)

And i thought it was Italian bikes with dodgy electrics/problems not Honda's

you should only need to change the sprag bearing part, the rest won't be worn..
mr honda wants about 70 notes for them.
have a look on ebay - you might find a complete assembly for about 25.
