Hi Guys, apologies as im sure this question has been asked a million times but i couldnt find anything on it!
I've fitted some scorpion race cans and had the fueling setup properly to match and she ran lovely, then...i got a little bored and decided to fit a pipercross filter which has made it run nicely when warmed up and added a fair bit of pull up top end but its now pretty rough at low revs and doesnt pickup from tickover very well at all! Very stuttery and slow to get upto about 4k at which point it seems to rev ok again upto the red line. I think its also much better when warmed up to!
I assume i've changed the fueling by adding a much less restrictive filter? I dont know much about engines to be honest but am trying to learn! My guess is that the extra airflow is making the mixture lean but how come it seems to run ok at higher revs?! I guess the logical thing would be to put the old filter back in but im now hooked on the extra pull and am happy to sacrafice a little torque if only it will run smoother from tickover! Stalling a 1000cc twin is not good for the reputation!
So...How do i adjust the fueling and any tips on how many turns etc? Im upfor abit of an adjust and test approach but im not too sure where the screws are and how to adjust it!
Any help would be appreciated!
Cheers

Re: Adjusting fueling for a pipercross filter...?
marty,
not the answer you are looking for, but from my experience and what I read un teh USA forum, the Storm is not always happy with a really high flow filter. You end up with a hole in the power at 5k, and whilst some get it fixed some never can, and the answer is to go back to stock filter.
I had a K&N, and got the 5K dip...........makes the bike feel faster as the power kicks in harder [like a 2 stroke as the powervalve opens], but you have lost the mid range torque which is what v-twins are all about...............I had a Dynojet kit fitted and although I fiddled, I was never happy, so in the end I went back to the Stock filter which sorted it.
I have now got a BMC road filter which is half way between the K&N [and the BMC race spec part] and the stock Honda filter. and that is working great. I have the good midrange and the top end that the K&N had.
If you want to fiddle, the easy screw to work on is the idle mixture screw, that should be adjusted to stop the stalling and get the initial pick up correct, but for the 1/4 throttle you will need to take the carbs off and raise the needles [either need shims if still honda parts, or move the clip if it has kit parts].
There is also a question of drilling a hole in teh base of the slide to make them lift faster, that is part of the DJ kit.
To be honest with you, you may want to go to a Dyno, and get them to identify where the problem is and if it is rich or lean, then you can go home and make the mods and take it back.
Oh and you can only get the BMC filter as an import............sorry for building your hopes up

wouldnt bother doing that tbh - it was that what caused my slides to pick up too fast & make the mixture way over-rich between 3 & 7kAMCQ46 wrote: There is also a question of drilling a hole in teh base of the slide to make them lift faster, that is part of the DJ kit.
basically it was coming on the main jet at 3k when it shouldve been on the needle.
as amcq said, dyno it first & listen what the man says

Re: Adjusting fueling for a pipercross filter...?
Cheers, thanks for the response guys.
I've taken your advice and put the old filter back in and it does run alot better again. However, when i took the old pipercross filter out i noticed that alot of fuel seemed to have been fired out the back on the carbs onto the filter and into bottom of the airbox? Is this normal is that a result of it not running properly?
I've got a DJ stage one kit which I havn't fitted yet but will this work with the pipercross filter or will it still be a problem?!

Re: Adjusting fueling for a pipercross filter...?
It will be needed for a high flow filter & pipes, so I would fit it and try, it should also work with the stock filter.
Again get a dyno check once you have it running again

Nothing to do with standing on a spring, then?benny hedges wrote:

it gets worse, the ones i ordered and waited for since july 22 were the wrong ones :/
still got the home made ones in.
picks up better from tickover with the 50 pilots tho, dunno if you noticed the bit of splutter under 3k?
thats why i had the idle so high, seems ok now

Don't think I had it under 3K, TBH!
Didn't notice fuelling particularly, so can't have been too bad.
