Bargain Ohlins shocks

Post by vtrbarmy »

Just had a mail through from FTR Suspension, they are offering up to £150 trade-in for your old shock, for anyone who fancies a nice Ohlins unit.

http://www.ftrsuspension.co.uk/exchangescheme.htm

Could be a cheap(er) way of upgrading the OEM rear shocker..... :D

spose its a bargain, of sorts....

but seeing as the recommended rear shock HO 701 S46HR1C1S is price code 23 (1,139 euros) it's a drop in the ocean lol.
the full cartridge setup for the front? i'm not even looking lol, dont expect much change out of 5k! 8O
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

For that price, buy a nice low-mileage Aprilia Mille, swap the suspenders over and sell the old Aprilia frame, plastics and engine.
Instant pocket money!
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Sounds like a good idea but if you keep your std shock chances are you can put it back on when you sell it and still get more selling the Ohlins unit separately. You hardly every get any more on the resale value of the bike, especially on a trade in, for leaving any bling on it. If fact a lot of folks don't want to know it if it's not standard. 8O

Very true Pete, totally agree, but then OEM rear shocks are cheap as chips on eBay. You could buy one trade it in, get your money back easy and still get a discount from FTR.
FTR also do progressive springs if anyone is looking to upgrade.

I happen to have a WP shock on the back of my VTR and the transformation it made to the handling was untrue, showed up every flaw of the standard shocker. Suspension upgrades are never cheap, but they do make bikes a lot nicer to ride, transforming the handling.

before you get too excited about this bargain of a lifetime deal....
it does say 'up to £150'
for a standard firestorm shock you're more likely to get £1.50

Ooooh you cynic Benny!

No FTR are very a very reputable company, seriously if anyone is interested, ring up and speak with Will, betcha get a good deal. FTR are just covering themselves for any real old naff leaky units that may come in, I suspect that anyone ringing up who has a working shock will get a damn good deal. Still unless you ring up, you'll never know..... :)

Have dealt with them in the past myself for my other bike and have nothing but praise for them, realistic company with excellent customer service rather than some of the money grabbing and run never to be seen again outfits that are out there.

Sounds like you've thought it all through and got it all worked out :D
Have you got your front done too?
Personally I thought the best result was getting the front done, the rear was just icing on the cake! 8)
Umm! I love cake! :shifty:

Me think it all through - I wish! Did the shocker on the back first, as found it really quite spongy when I got my VTR, which then really showed the front up big time, so put a set of progressive in and then took it along to a suspension specialist to get it all set up properly (did have a go myself and wasn't far out, but with the tweaks and that they did, it just planted the bike a heck of a lot better).

Would it have been better to do the front first? Cheaper! Probably, I find that in general OEM front suspension is too soft especially under braking, have tried different weight fork oils and playing with standard springs but the progressive's do work that bit better and whilst not cheap, not overly expensive at the end of the day.

Not that I'm an airhead knee down everywhere, throttle to the max type, but I do like to know that if in a 'situation' at any time, I've got the best possible chance of avoiding chucking it down the road - so spend time getting suspension set up and improving brakes before anything else, after all, all bikes are built to a budget, often it's a question of improving items to build the bike that the manufacturer should have built in the first place - but then it would have been substantially more expensive. All about Balances I guess (mainly bank balance! :eh: ). problem with the Storm is that the damn thing gets under your skin, it's an absolute hoot to ride, suppose one could say spend "upgrade" money on another bike - but apart from an SP1 or 2 (which I'd only want to upgrade anyway), what other bike is there at this sort of price that gives this much fun? That's the problem !!!!

.

100% with you on that, rather have a bike that handles & stops than one that is fast in a straight line.
Got Rogerd forks, Nitron shock and CBR600 calipers & M/C on Armstrong wave disks, but still run the stock pipes [ok I have cut the baffles out, but you know what I mean]. and they all work together to make the bike 10times better [faster / safer] than it was before
