cct plus chain?

Post by Darknomad »

heya ppl im going to order a new pair of tensioners
i have a rattle that needs addressing i swear the spring popped just after i had em stoppered
anyway the garage is saying if im ordering a pair of tensioners ill need a new pair of chains is this correct?
or should i just not get the chains and stick with just the cct's?
im confident i can do the job pretty mutch solo though i may have to nudge tone for possible a supervision as im doing it :D
plus if i take out the old stopper bits of bar from the old cct's and place em in the new cct's in theory wont the measurements be the same?
or am i looking at a whole new mod again that would be tricky as i dont posses the tools to do that also

They're not wrong. Not really. I've just replaced my cct's only but then I didn't have any rattles it was just a precautionary thing. I had a good look at and a listen to mine and even got the techy to check .... we were both of the conclusion that the chains were fine. That'd be a bit of a dilema for me.
The force is strong with this one!!!

Amos,
dont change the chain mate, it not a service item [well the CCT's should also last the life of the bike, but thats another story].

In theory the stoppers you already made, should work, but recheck when you have fitted them that the new CCT's have the correct lash [1/4 turn of teh little key on one and 1/2 on the other from memory, but check the workshop section for sure].

No, you don't need to replace the chains, they run in and oil bath and no-one's ever had one go that I'm aware of. To give you an idea of how confident I am about that I'm re-using the chains for my rebuild engine.
The only thing that'll happen is that they stretch slightly, that makes the lines on the cam sprockets slightly out of line with the head.
If you're fussed you can "degree the cams in" which just means slotting the screw holes on the sprockets so that you can turn the sprocket a few degrees relative to the cam, thereby getting the cam lobes back to exactly the right place.
I'll be doing that on my rebuild and will post pictures and an explanation on here.

Re the stoppers, I set yours with about 1mm clearance, and as you saw they were cut and ground to different lengths to make sure that they gave the right clearances.

You should be able to just swap them over to new ones, but once done you need to check that the CCT isn't over-tight, as suggested above. Just wind them both back out from their normal position; as long as you can wind them out
half a turn they're fine.

The stopper is effective as long as it's at least 7mm long; because that prevents the plunger retracting so far that the chain gets slack enough to jump teeth. I make them a much snugger fit as it means they don't rattle, that's all.

Give me a call if you want me to watch or assist, happy to help.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I was wondering the exact same thing a couple of months ago, but can now confirm the stopper will be the correct length when fitted from the old into the new CCT's, as I carried out just that and it was spot-on. But still a good idea (as AMcQ and Tony say) to check them after they're fitted.

Replacing both cam chains is not normally required I agree.

Chris.
