diaphragm springs!

Post by benny hedges »

ah, the long wait....
i ordered these on 22nd july lol, first they sent me the wrong parts, then finally they arrived.
part number16050-mbb-d41

what happened is, i fitted some smaller springs from a dynojet race kit which i got cheap... on the dyno it became apparent that the slide was lifting fully at 3k rpm, opening up the main jet way too early & making the mixture stupidly over-rich.
unfortunately i couldn't just refit the original ones cos i trod on one and flattened the fker :/

so i fitted the one good original spring and sort of made one to get me by, expecting 5-7 days wait...
this is what i've been running on-

Image
the left one is the home-made effort, the middle is the original one, and the one on the right is one of a matched pair of new ones

look at the difference lol!
obviously this has been drastically affecting the carb balance up to 6-7k when the slide would normally be fully open, as the different spring length and strength would affect the way the vacuum pulls the diaphragm,

but look at the difference between the original spring and a new one 8O
obviously these springs are a wearing part - maybe they should be replaced after so many miles / years?

once these are in & my .50 pilots (doing it atm) - and i've fixed my blowing rear header & re-balanced the carbs, i'll stick it back on the same dyno & see what the difference is

what a fkin tw@ that was lol...
fitting the bigger pilot jets, the bastid pin that holds the floats in place fell out - could i find it :Argue 1: :redface :Ball Kick: no. gone.
under the expansion tank i think.
thank crouton i put bog roll down the inlets cos you know it would've gone down there
fortunately i found a drill bit same diameter so i cut it down and made a new one.
so apart from a blowing pipe under the shocker & linkage, where i can't get at, it's ready to roll again.

one day i'll buy a bike & leave it standard! can't leave crouton all alone me :silent:

well the carbs are done & balanced, all seems ok.... just the noisy exhaust to fix...
it's been blowing since rhayader tbh and getting progressively louder until i set off for oulton park at weekend and it went completely :/

thought the header (rear) had holed, but look at this --->
Image
part 6 (there's a few of them) is a packer which goes between the header from the cylinder to the downpipe, collector etc...
on the rear pot it is completely missing. gone. not a clue where???
it hasn't broken up and gone down the pipe, unless it's broken up & been blown out the unbaffled cans?

not a clue - there's a good 2mm gap all round the pipe so it isn't going to seal lol.
temporarily ive wrapped the header in coarse wire wool and asbestalux tape, should be ok til the new part comes - hopefully it won't take 3months like the springs!
cost - £10.30

i did look at those stainless pipes btw, they look great - maybe i'll get meself a set when it's all rebuilt.
theres 2 sets of shiny ones on ebay atm, £49 & £89... much better than the crap mild steel original pipes...

tell u what... wire wool in the exhaust is ace!!!
(not very good for making packings with tho lol)

try it - push a good wad of it inside the exhaust & give it a good rev...

EXCELLENT!!! :Rock1: (bill & ted style riff)
a magnificent shower of sparks comes out the back of the can - very dramatic at night :P
toadly ossom dood :Rock1:

Benny, if it makes you feel any better, we've all done things like that :)

Do keep us posted on the dyno results, it should make a difference with the correct springs (Zebedee's  ) in the carbs.

off out for a ride today and maybe going anglesey next week for a track day so the dyno can wait a bit... tbh i want to see what it feels like under my bollox before i dyno it - no sense wasting good dosh if it doesn't feel right...
plan is to go down there early with my box of jets & goodies & i won't be leaving til the fuelling is spot on, that's all that's holding it back atm.
trouble is, i made so many changes all at once when it was off the road that it's hard to just guess it right.
and since then added the cams, vac valves, light flywheel, modded the airbox somewhat etc... all makes a difference to the fuelling & rate the slides open etc..
i'll get it right one day lol.

i want to get all the mechanical & fuelling stuff bob on before i take it apart for respray & powder coating, cos otherwise if i'm taking off the tank & fairing all the time there's a chance it'll get wrecked again & marked.
quite happy to ride it looking like a shed while it's a work in progress, but once i/m happy with it i would like it looking pretty.... go for a ride with the lads & theyre all on shiny bikes.. mine's a fkin eyesore lol.

i did clean it last weekend tho....... with 180 grade discs :biggrin

I quite agree, no point in wasting money before you feel happy with it.
