Stator problem

Post by davros »

Hi guys wonder if anyone has experienced a problem with the stator wires getting very hot (to the point of scorching the insulation around the connector area). I had left the bike for a few weeks came to start it and found it didn't have enough in it to start the bike left it on charge for an hour started the bike then noticed some smoke coming from the wiring loom near the tank, turned out to be the stator connector block, there was some moisture about so i dried it out started the bike but the wires are still getting hot. Checked the earth connections to the engine and frame, even ran a new earth back from the rectifier back to neg terminal on the battery, but hasn't made any difference. Does anyone know if this idicates a problem with the stator, an earth fault or something else. Does anyone know what the resistance across the stator windings should be (measuring 0.5 - 0.6 ohms), any help much apreciated :? :?

Might not be the stator
could be the regulator or the battery or both. I've even seen it happen just because the connectors were corroded and crappy. Give all the connectoers a good clean and then check your voltage across the battery when running. It should remain stable at 12.5 -14.8 volts(if memory serves. If it's stable I would check/change the regulator if its really low I woud look at the battery or a possible wiring short.

Last time I had this happen it was not the stator wires, but the main lead (fat cable) from the relay down to the starter motor. Gets very hot when part-frayed through.

You can check this by bridging it with a good solid length of copper cooker (30 amp) cable- not really man enough for the job but if connected securely it will help the cable to cope.
Does it just smoke when you're trying to start it?
If so, that's your problem, probably.

Pull back the rubber boot where the lead goes into the starter motor, and see if the lead looks a bit dodgy.
But sometimes it frays inside the sheath, then it's impossible to see.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I cleaned the connector and made it tighter fitting, with regard to the battery it only a couple of months old. not checked the voltage yet. The wires are fine when starting but get gradually hotter as it runs, incidently it's the wires on the loom side of the connector which get hot, the ones from the stator must be a bigger gauge. I'll check the voltage across the battery when running I have noticed the battery has been a little drained a couple of runs when the lights have been on, could point to a faulty regulator. I'll let you know what the voltage is.

Just checked the voltage 14.5v when running looks OK to me, I'll have to look for a short, hate electrical faults :sad2

Yeah me too and I'm an electrcian
Has there ever been any electrical mods done?, indicators , alarm fitted? If not I'd have a quick look at the handlebar switches and then move over to all the plugs and sockets. Hopefully it'll just be a bit of corrosion somewhere and not in a loom.
Good luck

Cheers Pete, the wiring is all standard, it did have an alarm fitted but i've binned than and got a big chain instead. there are a few terminal blocks here and there where the alarm was fitted so I'll have to go through the connectors one by one, who said motorcyles weren't good fun!!

This is probably not going to help, but you did ask  According to the workshop manual the stator coil resistance should be between 0.2 to 0.5 ohms.

Good luck in getting it sorted.

Chris.
