Pulled for speeding last night - not quite straightforward..

Post by Wicky »

Following my Cricket League's AGM and two pints (on a meal beforehand) overtook the League Sec bimbling along doing 25 in a 40 non residential area at 10.45pm when I spot something blue and flashing past my elbows in the mirror. Initially thought either a tardis or ambulance as the road is near the main hospital but after a while thought best to stop and see how I could help in any enquiries. So pull over, switch off, dehelmet and walk back to say a friendly hi to the emerging policeman. He starts with the usual why do you think you've stopped so I fess up to the overtaking. He then waffles on about how he had to be doing 70 to catch me. Mmmm interesting - I resist the temptation to say well if I was ahead of you then you'd have to speed yourself to catch me. Again he wanted me to incriminate myself but I calmly and politely state my version of events at most hitting 45, while thinking the worse if he's got his mind made up how he wants it to proceed.

Gagging for a ciggie after 3 hours of cricket tedium and sitting in the back of the police car while they checked my details but not sure if they'd let me out for smoke in case I scarpered. Instead I had to answer leading questions about if I was known by the police - past memories of returning back to London from backpacking travels and getting accosted by cockney policemen oddly asking if "I had any Michael Caine" and a few years later 15 policemen and two police dogs checking what seedlings were growing in my greenhouse (£200 fine) - "Professionally or socially?" was my straight answer now I've reached the heady heights of being a socially responsible school governor.

Half-an-hour of toeing and froing communications over the radio before it was announced that my '97 Storm didn't officially exist! Mighty strange as last time I looked I'd owned it for 10 years bought from a dealers, previous owner a local Doctor, I had a licence, insurance and road tax (not on the bike) and recent MOT. Ah! it hit me - at the MOT I needed a new plate as it was marked from seepage, so to fit a new one they had to break the old one off. So off they trot to get my frame no. After 10 minutes searching I'm asked where the frame no. is located. getting warmer they have to switch off the epileptic fit inducing blue light to read and copy down the details/ As they do so reinforcements arrive in the form of Bodie & Doyle style traffic cops leaping across the bonnet of their V8 volvo to lend their weight to my impending doom.

'Bodie' goes round the Storm kicking the tyres, not finding anything out of order focuses on the open race micron cans. "I'm a biker", <why do Police always have to say that?> "My neighbour has a Mille with loud pipes - he doesn't anymore" was all he uttered at me as fault with the bike and demonstrated the kindness his of discretionary law enforcement. 'Doyle' while standing back on the pavement to take in the awesomeness of the Storm trod in dog sh1t - Not the association I would want anyone to make...

An incoming radio message broke the moment. The National Police Computer, after whirring on the problem, had spat out an answer. The number plate on my bike was wrong as two numbers were transposed - thanks, thank you very much MOT-a-Bike. Add that to my list of crimes... then I overheard the original policeman who pulled me over say to Bodie that they didn't have any speeding hardware in his patrol car. A glimmer of blue sky. So apart from no road tax displayed, possibly close to the limit (no breathtest offered), false plates, loud pipes and a subtle attitude they had no evidence against me. After a quick Kangaroo 'court' conference between all the assembled officers, and an hour since I was stopped, I had to thankfully accept a lecture on my filthy antisocial behaviour and to get everything fixed pronto or else... Suddenly I was a free man a they hopped into their vehicles and were about to drive off when I waved them down and asked if I could please have my helmet back from the back seat.

I thought the next day would return to normal - had some miles to cover so didn't head first thing to MOT-a-bike for a correct plate but headed off out of town only to spot 'Bodie' & 'Doyle' on a mini-roundabout going in the other direction - kept my head down and within the speed limit and trying to keep the revs down. Phew I made a getaway only to stumble across a few miles later in the countryside cop cars galore parked up and civvy folk standing about giving me glares WTF My paranoia was compounding at an exponential rate as police motorcyclists approached gesticulating to pull over. Once gain I dutifully pullover expecting more summary justice when the Queen in a roller comes hurtling by in a flash, as I later discover to visit a strawberry jam factory for a cream tea.

try this next time,..........I have nothing to say, anything I say I would like a solicitor present so please take me back to the station where i will answer any question you have with my/duty solicitor present. You will be on your way in 10 mins. Takes a bit of balls to do it but there is no way they will do it, the custody seargent will roast their baldrocks for giving them extra work.........Unless you are guilty of a crime this will avoid all the fascist bullshit, as soon as you ask for a solicitor it all changes..........and you do have a right to silence. This wombles em off even more.

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Given that the vehicle was effectively on false plates, refusing to answer their questions would lead you down the path of an arrest for sec 25 PACE given the difficulty of proving your ID and ownership. No custody officer would "roast anyones baldrocks" for that. Yes I have done both roles and understand both sides of the events. They could also have given you a VDRS, which would have cost you as well. In all given the circumstances you had quite a result. Well done. I retired from the Job in 2007 by the way, so game on.

But all very minor things when you could be doing something constructive like proper police work, instead of harrassing people for pathetic stuff, wheres the copper when Johnny 17 year old punches me in the side of the head after he has had 6 vodka shots, bursts my ear drum, and I lose £450 for a weeks work lost. Traffic cops you make me sick with your Hitleresk attitudes and self importance, it makes me laugh when I watch you lot on tv being very serious about a dodgy plate here and a tax disc missing there, and a reg plate light out, Ooooh terrible, shock horror. Do me a favour and put yer head back up your butt. Sorry but those are my feelings.

Nothing like a well reasoned argument. The Job is a neccesity. Society gets what it demands, in the majority of cases, and traffic enforcement is something that society wants, sorry if that doesn't suit you but it's a fact.
I am sorry if you have suffered at the hands of yob culture and would hope that your locals did what they could to help you.
For your information mate I never was a Traffic officer, I never worked in Colchester AND I RETIRED IN 2007, so I don't get your drift with me being the target for your angst. I answered a post which given the circumstances I thought was poor advice.
Anytime you feel the need to try to put my head up my butt be my guest.

I said this wasnt aimed at you and wasnt a personal comment to have a headupyourarsectomy to you. This was aimed at traffic cops who do piss me off. Not the pc world you thought is it. One mans reasoned argument or discussion is another mans unreasonable one.

There was always a certain amount of antagonism between street and trafpol to be honest. There are a lot fewer Trafpols now as road policing is handled by Gatso's (whole different issue there).
You and I will have to agree to differ on the role of plod, but having worked for the Met for 30 odd years I have my opinions too. There you go.

Thanks Kev L it's always been by view to cooperate as far as reasonable.

Just to add I'm personally glad the officers were thorough in the checks they made esp the registration plate rock up. As many moons ago a friend had his CBR nicked - trawling round the local bike shops a few weeks later I spotted it in one of the more dodgier dealers, clumsily emulsioned in magnolia and with false plates and ground out and restamped engine no. etc in for an MOT (amazingly it had passed in its new identity!) A quick call to the police to stake it out as the 'owner' was coming back that afternoon (I still had to advise them that they'd best park their cars out of view just in case that detered the tea-leaf returning  ). Glad the police made the arrest as the thief was an American Football player :eek2 .

I just wasn't impressed by being accused of doing 60+mph without any evidence.

Today got the number plate fixed and had a laugh about it at MOT-a-bike - The office girl in charge of the reg no printer was very sheepish. Afterwards on the way to work saw a shed load of police looking for untaxed vehicles between Colchester & Clacton... I wasn't stopped.

Glad it's sorted mate.
Many moons ago, 1978 I think, I had a car nicked from outside a girlfriends house. My first car it was, a Cortina 1300 de luxe Mk2, try to contain yourselves!! Anyway I had already bought a newer car (Corsair 1700 V4) so no real problem. Anyhow insurance company paid me out and everything returned to normal. The next bank holiday I was working at an Arsenal match and after the match was walking up the hill away from the ground when I looked in the car park of the flats and there is my old motor with a nice shiney set of plates (only shiney thing on it TBH). So as I am standing there thinking I really should do something about this, a local scrote stolls up to the car and gets in. The rest as they say is history. Sometimes these things seem pre-ordained
