Damn it's cold. Heated grips?

Post by Pantaloonie »

I'm looking at getting some heated grips for my 'storm, about to pull the trigger on some Oxford Hot Grips 2010 Sports version, unless anyone here knows a reason I shouldn't.
I'll need a little advice as to where to hook it up so it is ignition powered, where is the best place to take the feed from?
Thanks in advance guys.

Just fitted some. I would say, do a bit of planning first as there is miles of wire with them. I fitted the control unit on the ally fairing bracket n/s to the rear of the choke knob. still lots of wire to loose so i fitted the other black box on the o/s rear next to the reg/rec with wires running along and across the bike with the main harness to keep things neat. For a power source, spliced into a side light connector near back light.Hope this helps. Sorry no pics :biggrin

Simo,
I'll admit I'm no bike electrics expert, but I would have said with the amount of amps the heated grips will draw you really need to be connecting them into a heavier duty cable than the back/side light wire.

The ones on the SP are great Mike

I've only had one problem-one of the wires got caught last week and snapped/nipped off (clumsy b@stard me :x)

Did you run the wires under the tank Mike? Looks like I'll need to trace it back and repair. Oh, when I can get to the bike-the bike safe still has a 4ft snow/ice drift againt the door :x

Definitely add a fused relay for the grips - I picked one up cheaply from an auto electricians

Then for extra cosy hands add handlebar muffs - mine are 7tech ones that keep the rain and chill off

A very good point, Simo may have fitted a relay, in which case activating it via the side/back light should be fine.

I fully agree a relay is the best way to go.

No worries Simo, I just didn't want you or anyone else melting the wiring.

a guy at 1 of the sites i work at went to a honda dealer and asked how much to get some oxfords installed....
had a look at a set their tech had just fitted - he advised wiring it into the ignition switch 8O
imho thats a fkin stupid idea unless you want to melt the tiny contacts in the switch and cost yourself a few quid on a new one.
side lamp is best bet, switching a relay straight to the battery.
no danger of melting wiring, no danger of leaving them switched on overnight.

btw honda wanted £150 fitted for the oxford classic & £200 for the 'superior' honda grips

Thanks for all the tips, looks like I'd better add a relay kit to my shopping list...

A relay is about a fiver in Halfords, or any car spares corner shop.

I found this diagram to show the pins to connect to:

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
