Did I do the right thing?

Post by Soutie »

I got a scottoiler off e-bay :D it had only been used for about 400miles (according to the owner) but it is in really good nick.
So today I messed around fitting it to the storm, mounting the oil res and the rest went ok.

The scottoiler is the vacuum operated type, lifting the rear of the petrol tank there is a thin pipe going to the back of the fuel tap, I connected a "T" piece in this pipe and plumbed in the scottoiler vacuum pipe.

As I haven't had the chance to test if its working, I am wondering if this was a good plan?

yes that is the correct thing to do, so should all be ok as long as you put the vac hose back on the correct connection on the fuel tap.

the one on the back, not the one pointing down at the base of the tap.

just a tip - glue the rectangular refiller rubber thing,
mine fell off while i was in traffic, dumping a cupfull of chain oil on the exhaust.... looked like a burnout lol!
stunk to crouton & lucky it didnt go on the back tyre.

Why would you glue the thing you ned to refill the reservoir every 500 miles or so?

I have had one for 10 years and it works a treat - just remember to turn it down when the weather is warm and vice versa when it is cold or wet. You will get 35,000 miles out of a set of chain and sprockets easily with a Scotoiler.

I know, because I have, on both bikes.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

On the subject of filling the scottoiler, what should you put in it ? I see there is proper oil but I just filled mine with 10/40, seems to work ok :?

Chainsaw oil is not a good idea, ok in the dry but as it is biodegradable it is effectively water soluble so will just wash off in the rain or wash the bike, I know I tried it on my quad bikes ! :eek2

Ok, think I will get some proper oil. No point penny pinching on oil then wearing out the c&s early

i fill mine from the tube on top of the rubber bung with the nozzle & tube on the oil bottle.-
its an ordinary scottoiler mk7.
tbh i can't be 100% sure it wasn't tampered with.
i'd ridden it for a few weeks since filling it and on the day i rode it to morecambe and left it parked up all day.
on the way back i got less than 2 miles before noticing clouds of smoke off the exhaust collector...
seems funny something doesnt come off when it's blatting down the road but does when it's parked up

ive used chainsaw oil on this one and previous oiler & cant say ive noticed it washing off in rain or with jetwash.
ive used stihl oil and the b&q stuff and it's all ok.
also comes in a handy little bottle, just enough to fill the res.

Some oil can rot rubber and so not suitable for use on o ring/ x ring chains.
Chains costing as much as they do be careful what you put in your scotoiler.

10/40 wont damage the viton rings in the chain but it will fling off.
the main property of scottoiler oil is it's non fling property, like chainsaw oil.

That siting looks ok, but if you carry a pillion you might want to think about whether their foot could pull the feed pipe off- any oil leaking near tyres is a bad thing.

Mine is mounted inside the seat surround, cable tied to the subframe in the LH side.
You have to take the seat off to fill it, but it's no biggie every week or so.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

i put mine almost vertical, in line with the rear shock, bracketed on the inside of the subframe with the supplied bracket.
easy to get at but out of the way & didnt bottom on the swing arm travel with suspension travel
