No, stop it, don't listen to him.
Just ride your bike on salty roads every time you can.

This will leave salty deposits all over your bike, which has two positive effects:

1. It''ll mean the your bike isn't shinier than mine, and
2. it'll leave less salt on the road when I get mine out.

I use that KYY jelly on my jacket zips.
