Overall reliability......?

Post by encee »

Okay, STILL giving it loads of thought on which bike to get, once it`s time (sometime in the next 6 weeks, hopefully), and I really do fancy another Firestorm (last owned one 10 years ago).

In view of the fact that the I would be unable to get a Storm that`s any newer than 6 years old, how do you lads find the general reliability of the Storm, now that many of them are getting on a bit.....?

I only ask, as I will also need to commute on mine, should I get one, and it`s a round trip of just under 45 miles a day, so I need something I can rely on.

Okay, don`t get me wrong, I know that even the newest bike can let you down five minutes out the showroom, but all things considered, do you generally find the Storm to be reliable and trustworthy ?

Cheers........in anticipation.......

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

I had my first storm from 2003 to 2007 with no breakdown or problems, think it was totally standard

Current storm had since 2007 with no break down, current has standard r/r and standard cct's although looking to get this changed over in the coming months to manuals

Encee, generally speaking, (as already mentioned) the rectifier on the earlier models (16ltr fuel tank models) had no cooling fins on it, so it most cases had a short life. Most of us swap that over for a R1 or R6 unit and the CCT's (cam chain tensioners) need modifying or replace with manual ones. Those are the two main weaknesses. Apart from that they are normally pretty reliable providing they have been and are serviced at the required intervals like all vehicles.

Although many of us on here luv the V twin torque not everyone feels the same way about it. My advice is if you're new to the V twin world I would suggest a test ride before buying one.

Chris.

**EDIT**
I just noticed your post about CCT's and the fact you owned one some years ago, so ignore my last paragraph :)

Quite unstressed engine, so it will be good with minimum maintenance for at least 50,000 miles if serviced properly (valve clearances every 16K, regular oil and oil filter changes) as long as the CCT's are either changed for new annually or changed to manuals, and rr is swapped out.

Not much else goes wrong, and worse case is an engine will cost you about £399.

If you get one try to find out if the shock linkages have ever had attention (I know they're on the service schedule, but it's hard to know if they were actually done).
If you don't know, or they haven't been touched, they're quite easy to service and then they're good for 20,000 between strip/grease sessions, or if you fit grease nipples, then so much the better.

Are they reliable?
With the exception of CCT's, yes.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
