Mushrooms (crash not magic)

Post by Kev L »

I bought some of the Double hard crash mushrooms the other day and they arrived today. Nice looking kit in a pretty box!!! Now I had a read through the superhawk forum and there was an intersting thread on the advantages and disadvantages of mushrooms in the event of a crash. Slow speed the consensus was that shrooms help save damage to panels, however a higher speed off can mean greater damage as the mushrooms dig in and cause damage to the frame. The allegation M'lud is that they also cause the bike to leap about in a crash rather than slide, thus causing more damage to frame etc where it may onl have been panels.
I have heard similar arguments before, and to be fair haven't fitted them before to my bikes. We fitted R&G to my daughters CBR600RR and when she dropped it on gravel they did save a lot of damage, however the cost of replacing the R&G stuff was almost at Honda prices.
So to protect or not to protect, discuss........ (no Durex jokes please)

Got them on mine, and I've bought a couple of spares for when I next drop it.
The brackets bend but you can bash them straight again.
Better that than the frame!
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I recall you saying you had them Tony. Have you had a bike, floor, interface involving said bike sliding for any distance? Did the brackets dig into the frame?

well i was regretting not fitting them last weekend when i dropped it at oulton park lol.... bungs wouldve saved the lever, brake pedal and fairing scuff...
but
who was it who cat b'd their bike last year when an errant r&g bung ripped a 50p size hole in the frame???
i seem to remember him breaking it here & ebay

a high speed off, the bike is fkt anyway imo seeing as the forks, yokes and headstock are made of putty, but a simple drop or low speed lowside & they will save you a lot of heartach and dosh.
mate threw his zx6 down the track at cadwell at a fair rate of knots, just days after fitting bungs... only visible damage was a bit of grass staining and a new chamfer to the timing cover.

another thing worth remembering.... drop it at low speed & hole either side casing & you're going nowhere.

I can see where your'e coming from with the race track comment, nice smooth surface with nothing to cause the bike to jump around too much. I think I will fit them for the silly slip up scenario but wondered if anyone had experienced massive damage where the bike did a bit of break dancing due to supposed protection.

thirty mph slide, on black ice.
Worked well enough, still allowed the fairing and bar ends to touch down, as well as the RH can and powder coated clutch cover.

But cosmetic damage rather than broken bits, and still ridable once I'd picked it up.
