charging problem
I have replaced the rectifier as its a common problem - was undercharging. No lights on charges properly. With lights on charges properly on tick over but as revs are increased the charge dies away so that its just 12v. Has anyone got an explanation of this and what needs to be done please to rectify the problem (excuse pun) lol

Re: charging problem
did you get the r/r off ebay?????
no saying you didnt buy a duff one.... unless it's melted there isnt much external difference between a fkt one and a new one.
failing that, could be the stator.
did you replace the battery after the r/r failed??? very often they take out the battery.

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Re: charging problem
Battery is fine - holding charge - starts just fine. Note - the rectifier was not overheating - new rectifier from ebay is charging battery correctly on higher revs but when lights are put on - if on tick over its just fine but as revs increase the charge tails off to next to nothing. I dont think it is the stator. Strangely a VTR800 bike for sale on ebay has same trouble and he has replaced everything and still the problem exists. I think that perhaps there is some sort of leakage when the lights are put on.

Re: charging problem
Can anyone help? Suggestions?
Re: charging problem
You might have a partial short on some or all of the coils in the stator.
This could mean that the stator will produce voltage, but not enough current, and so once load is applied (lights on) it doesn't produce enough.
Suggest you try another alternator, but before you do, fit yet another reg rec, just to make sure that it's ok.
Does the headlight stay on and remain bright when the engine is not running?

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: charging problem
had a similar issue with my cbx.... i could charge it overnight, it would start and run fine for days, but soon as i used the lights it would die on me within 20 mins or so.tony.mon wrote:You might have a partial short on some or all of the coils in the stator.

?
caught me out a few times.
one coil was shorted to earth.
new (to me) stator fixed it.

OK - where's the best place for a stator then guys?
Just off that when I put lights on the battery is charging and as revs increase, the charge rate dies off. Never ever heard of that before.
Thanks for input so far.

Re: charging problem
Have fitted brand new regulator /rectifier...so thats eliminated - even with old regulator it was charging with no lights and when had lights on the battery would discharge slowly over a period of MONTHS...not days. The charge simply dies away with lights on when engine revs are above tick over - on tick over, the battery is charging.
SO OK - is it ebay for a stator?
