Intercoms - advice needed

Post by AMCQ46 »

Looking at getting an intercom set for rider to pillion. Not keen on the ones with lots of wiring, so thinking about one of the Blue tooth types like :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Interphone-F3 ... 2eb363e808.

anyone got any experience with these, got any better reccomendations or know where to get a better price?

obviously need something that works with the noise of a V2 with open pipes, and is good up to 3 figure speeds. main think is being able to talk with Pillion [so she can tell me how badly I am riding, or I can tell her to hold on when I am about to nail it for an overtake!] being able to add music or phone is a bonus

Funnily enough mate, im looking for the exact same thing.

Originally I wanted a rider to pillion system, but now she has a 125, I want a bike to bike system.

If you only need pillion comms, then you can get the Duchini D909 helmet. They are about £100-150 and come ready fitted with all the stuff built in. They connect to phone, MP3, sat nav and other helmets.

There are also clip on systems like the one in your link. I had a look at one in J&S in Doncaster at the weekend. It had a range of 1000m or something, and cost £350, but they also did a cheaper version which had a 10m range for rider to pillion only.

Those ones clip on your helmet but wont fit every helmet out there. He showed me in the shop, and showed how it fitted. Took him a while to find a helmet that it fitted to properly. The thing with those systems is that they are stuck out from the helmet and can be quite bulky inside too. I had one a few years ago, but this was a radio one. Same idea, but ended up getting rid of it as you couldnt really hear the speakers properly, and if they werent fitted just right in the helmet, they stuck out a little in the wrong places and started to hurt my ear after a while.

Im now looking at the Viper helmet

Again this has it all built in and generally positive reviews. Says the speaker quality is excellent and with it all prefitted, there shouldnt be any sticky-outy bits to hurt my ears.

I would say that if you want a fit in system, go to a big bike shop and look at them over the counter and try them in your helmet before you buy. First to check they fit, and second to check your helmet can take the speakers and mic without them pressing against your head. Even the bluetooth one like the one you have in your link will have quite a few wires though, it will have little headphones with velcro on to stick inside the helmet and a mic to stick in there too. That little unit in the picture will be a part that you clip on to the bottom of your helmet near where the strap goes.

It might be a good idea to take your pillion's helmet, and possibly them as well, when you go to try it.

They'll be just as concerned as you about comfort etc.

This link might help, but as it might not be completely independent advice, as they'll try to push their own products:

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I use a Sena bluetooth unit to speak to my lady who rides her own bike. We both love them. Bit pricey in the UK, so would try the US ebay?

I also did a search on the Biker Forum and they rate the Cardo Scala G2 & G4 system.

better battery life, and can be bike to bike or bike to pillion..........the G4 can do a 4 way link up!

they also had a link to a good price [well expensive, but better that the other prices I have seen for the same thing]
http://www.satnaveasy.co.uk/cardo-scala ... 26514.html.

I think it is good advice to see how they fit in the helmet, have to work out how I do that in a shop, then go buy off the internet.

I have just ordered a set of those that griffo pointed out, mainly ordered them to use with my phone for music and sat nav, i will let you know what they are like as regards the phone calls when they arrive i would imagine they would be the same quality pillion to pillion. £35 delivered seemed a bargain to me http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 409wt_1270

Jonsey, That will be great, I will hold off any purchase till you report back on how you find those low cost ones. There is the usual conflict going on in my head between the Scots thrift and the gadget lover!

Will be interested to know what these are like, as they are a good price.

The major downside I see though is that the headphones that stick inside the lining of your helmet look quite bulky, similar to ones I had tried before. They hurt like hell after a little while because they are hard plastic and they are being pressed into your head and ear.

the bluetooth kit arrived at last the other day, i have fitted it in the helmet and to be honest i cant feel them, but can hear the music through them fine with my earplugs in. i will be trying them out on the bike in the morning about 11am so if anyone wants to see what their like i can call you off my mobile through them whilst i am on the bike, if you want to pm me your number.
